Gold is truly useless anyway except for decoration. A gold tool lasts for around 15 hits then breaks. Armor breaks quickly also. Gold blocks are the only good things that come out of it.

You also forgot Powered Rails, Clocks, and later on it becomes much more useful.

Unless you are planning to make a powered rail to anywhere on your map, then it's pretty useful.
In my map, I have plenty of sugar cane, clay, lapis, and gold. The one thing I'm starting to see less and less of is wood. Through-out my map, I've chopped down almost every single tree. If I were to take a look at my map, the top right corner is the ONLY place left that has wood; only around two stacks or so. All the saplings I've been collecting have gone to use in my furnace, but it looks like now that I'm going to have to use them for gathering.
Im fine with clay. Its hard to find on its own, but if you go down into almost any small pond of lake, you'll find some. For me, it has to be gold. I always want golden apples, and I never seem to find ANY gold!
I haven't found a single clay block yet, and as for sugar cane I found a few bits and started up a Sugar cane farm, that stuff grows so god damn quick!
Well for me I would have to say that Slimeballs are for me i only have 10 :F but since i started a farm i dont think it should be a problem so after slime balls i would have to say Glowstone.. Its a pain to go to the nether and shoot so many arrows at Ghast -.-

i found 7 pumpkins in my world, and i do believe there are no more out there.
wait, how do you start a sugar cane farm? haha.
forgot about pumpkins. i found absolutely none in the seed i started out with but i switched to deadmau5. that seed has quite a few pumpkins.
