My friend and I just coated the ground with them at one point because we had so many. When we came back a while later most of them had sprouted and we had a ridiculous forest like I've never seen. So my instinct is to say yes.
they also need light such as torch light but that will only work untill update 1.7.1 which comes in july. then you will need actual sunlight to grow things indoors.

If there isn't any room for the tree to sprout, it won't. Having it zero blocks away from the roof would leave it a sapling.
