Is it possible to make a mob trap (canals leading to the middle and mobs fall through and die)? I hate killing mobs because I spend most my time building and in caves.
Absolutely, they're quite popular. Some helpful tips for creating one is that water flows on one level for 8 blocks and lava flows for 4. Also if your plan is to kill them by dropping them I believe they need to fall 20+ blocks to die.

Pretty much what Chilli said. You can also use pistons for traps. (When they come out.) Also if you are looking to farm chickens automatically there is probaby some guides on youtube.
Another thing to keep in mind is that mobs need to be 24 blocks away from you to spawn. I have a mob trap that is 25 blocks up in the air with a falling trap for that reason.
