Dig to the bottom (bedrock). Diamonds seem to have a tendency to be near coal (at least for me, and whether this was intentional or not, I don't know.) Just keep digging close to, and near, the bottom. Once you find coal, mine that and a few squares out from that vien in every direction. Sometimes you just get a bad area. Hang in there. Hope that helps a tiny bit.
you could make a quarry or branch mine like suggested above, but i find that i can find more diamonds and have more fun if i just go caving and explore some diamond level caves. instead of digging in a straight line for hours you can just look out for exposed diamonds on the floor and walls in a cave.
Diamonds are most common between layers 12 and 16. Now that we have coordinates, just watch the Y coordinate. Be aware that the Y coordinate is where your head is. So if says Y: 13, that means your head is at layer 13.
I would suggest starting off at layers 12-16, as McAngusYoung suggested. After you have settled in the right location, begin strip mining in a 4m tall and 1m-3m wide tunnel. Once you run into Dirt/Gravel, you can mine it out if you have a Shovel, or just change direction. If it is Lava, I would 100% prefer the aforementioned action. If you run into a cave, search it for resources.
After a while of mining in the same general location and having multiple intersecting tunnels, you have made a labyrinth. Start another excavation at least one hectometer away from the last and repeat. Doing this in my main server with (mostly) my two friends, I have accumulated around 15 Diamond Blocks, and they collected a bit less combined.

Another alternative it to dig a quarry in a 16x16 area from surface to bedrock.
