Hey guys, just noticed today that if I break a block requiring a pickaxe to mine, and the pickaxe breaks when the block does, the game treats it as though I broke it with the wrong tool, and I can't harvest the block. Is that how it's supposed to happen or is that a bug in this version?
I dunno but it's happened to me and it always upsets me to lose even a single piece of coal. Lesson is, don't use a pickaxe with "low health" if it's a valuable block you're mining.

That bug has been fixed
As far as losing a resource you just mined, make sure you are using the minimum level material pickaxe when mining.
i.e. coal > any
iron > stone or better
gold and diamond > iron or better
obsidian > diamond only

There are very few problems in life that can't be fixed by the proper application of high explosives.
I actually thought it was an intentional game feature not a bug. Kinda like loosing iron bucket when you place lava in a furnace. A "cost" if you will.
Actually, it turns out you cant mine diamond with a gold pick axe.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think iron pickaxes are higher tier than gold pickaxes? It's hard to tell where gold is on the tier, because they work work faster than stone, but break faster than wood.

Iron is better than gold for all the reasons you listed. I just use gold for power rails.

Add me on xbox if you would like to see my server on minecraft 360 edition. Please have a mic and you are subject to booting based on our opinions.
I can say it doesn't do it on the PC version. Still doesn't answer the question if its a bug or not.
Really? I know this used to be in PC version somewhere between Beta 1.3 and Beta 1.6. I didn't ever see it in the "fixed" list from Beta 1.3 to current 1.2, but will need to try it out when I have some time to kill.
Interesting that Mojang declared it a bug... It kinda made since to me, and used to be in the wiki under durability or something.

Retired StaffOh is it a fixed bug? I must have lost the block in the water current below me or something then. I do know about the tiers and mining, but thanks.

Buckethead is the best guitarist ever. \m/
As for shovels and axes... You can collect dirt, sand, gravel, clay, and wood with your fist, so this is unaffected by the bug.
