I honestly can't see M$ archiving the entire XBLA library... Sure they may make another update that phases out pre-gensystem supported games, but not digital content. (RIP Halo 2)
I don't know exactly how it works now, but I'm under the impression they're constantly decommissioning servers for old games and silently removing other games from the market. If you owned the title, you will still have the option to download it, but new gamertags/players won't be able to locate the title in the market in order to purchase it. So, they're definitely archived, but not accessible to anyone that hasn't previously purchased it.
I would imagine this same process will happen for the next gen. But who knows?
MineCraft, in the mean time, has no dedicated servers. It should continue to function as long as the Live service does - at least, I think?
Minecraft (as far as XBox is concerned) has one BIG thing going for it that many other "niche" games don't have: a MASSIVE pre-release fanbase. Sure, MANY PC gamers wouldn't touch a console if it were the only video game experience left on the planet, and vice-versa. But there's FAR more to it than that. One MAJOR component of why I personally think MC will be around a quite some time is astonishing number of YouTube video's "supporting" Minecraft contraptions, ideas, and gameplay.
That alone has got a play a HUGE role in the "OMG, I HAVE TO TRY THIS" factor. EVERY time I go to YouTube, I end up watching Minecraft videos, longing to try this and build that. I can't be the only one.
Another factor that I think gets overlooked (I know it certainly applies to me, so I may be a bit skewed) is that it is a game that is so amazingly simple to play, kids and parents can play it together. My son and I are working on our fort now, and we have a TON of fun digging, building, crafting, riding the rails, killing zombies and spiders and just enjoying the game.
If we get bored, we head to YouTube for a few ideas for new stuff to build.
I do believe that yes, EVENTUALLY, the game will fade away, but I think it will be a surprisingly long time. I'd venture to say close to 10 years or so.
I totally agree! They shouldn't of released the game so 'incomplete', people saying things like 'I like the game starting from 1.6, watching it evolve'. Cut the ********, if you could choose to have a more complete game with a greater number of features you would. It was a poor move by 4J and Notch (whoever) releasing the game on such an early build.. People WILL get bored of the game very quickly.
Or they could release early. Make a quick couple mil, then release more a bit later.
Nah MS gave them the power to do a few BIG BIG updates for free so I doubt they would just not take advantage of that. Or ya know MS probably put them under contract so they have to make them. It's all anyone's guess at this point.
Naturally, the answer is always another question: how long will it be profitable for the publishers?
Well, at a certain point, you walk away... never invest another dime in it... and every penny it makes after that is profit.
If you do that anytime after the break even point, it stays profitable forever.
Minecraft fills a very odd niche for being on XBLA.
True, but it's a niche that needed to be filled. All the efforts to fill that niche on XBLA to date have been, IMO, garbage. I've spent months wishing I could get a game like Minecraft on my console.
(now I'm really gonna date myself)
Well, it's not like anyone else would date you.
I don't think that applies to most of the Xbox crowd.
It appeals to over two million of them, which I would suggest is probably enough.
dude your retarded minecraft is an old game and is still around the only thing that i see could be a problem on xbox is that the day is going to come when people are going to run out of resources and they will have abandon there world and start a new one but thats all i can see
minecraft is always going to be adding new things to the game for free thats the best part free there will always be something new to do.
My predicition is that they will update the game until they are starting to lose money. At that point they will drag people back into the game with some sort of DLC mod, just like COD has map packs. The mods I predict will either be written by 4J studios or bought/given from the modder who owns a mod on the PC version. For those saying that its impossible, it is only impossible for them to take the mod without the owner's permission. If the owner wants to give the mod to 4J or sell to 4J, that is totally legal. The modder can't sell to users, but can sell to the developers.

Age of Empires 3 hasn't been around for 11-12 years...
Sorry, seems like it.
Age of Empires: Oct, 1997 (almost 15 years)
Age of Empires 2: Sept, 1999 (almost 13 years)
Age of Empires 3: Oct, 2005 (almost 7 years)
Still a "long time" in game-years.
I see the point you are trying to make, I think, and I agree to a certain extent. But I believe MInecraft is a game that many people will stick with, even hardcore console gamers, just because it has that "non-linear" appeal that makes replay so appealling. Especially to people like me who have beaten the lastest Gears/Halo/Random Shooter game for the umpteenth time, and want something the ENDS different till the next installment comes out. Heck, I still play Knights of the Old Republic I and II, just because I have them lying around, and the offer gameplay with choices and variety to a certain extent.
I'm willing to bet there are enough people like me that will gladly keep feeding greens to this cash cow, and Microsoft,Mojang, and 4J will be glad to keep on milking it.

I have to say Minecraft on xbox will die when the 4J starts making mistakes, but as long as it stays true to being minecraft they'll be fine. They have already broke sell records so money is no issue. The games sits on second most played and number one most played on Xbox's chart. Now while I know it will never surpass the Pc version it will create a strong enough dedicated fan base that will help it stand the test of time. A game like this never gets out of date, its like lego toys. No matter how old you are or young you are stacking blocks is fun. It is when you make them complex that takes away the fun.
Abandon Minecraft? That's like, their main game ya' dip! Even though they are so much farther on the PC version, they already know what to do for the Minecraft Xbox360 XBLA anyways, so this topic should be deleted....
I don't think that minecraft is going to die anytime soon. When the front page of youtube has minecraft videos, you know it is popular beyond belief. But I do think that eventually 4j and Microsoft will give up on it. I think Mojang will probably do the same, but the modding community on pc is very open, and large, and with official mod support, minecraft will live for a very long time. I think that the xbox version unfortantely will die off faster partially because dlc. The pc has set a standard for all these free features, that you are going to be charged for on the xbox, eg: skins. But everything has to pass, but I expect the pc version to last longer currently.
Why it will survive
It has broken records and is the 2nd most played game this week or last (cant remember)
Sure with updates they will continue to make money through DLC which will make 4J and MS very happy as its all about if the product makes money and it looks like this product is smashing record sales
The best part is more people will buy this through word of mouth and more pc gamers might come over to xbox when we get further on with the update
The PC might have mods and things like that but nothing beats the comfort and ease of an xbox control pad
And is it bad when you said that minecraft has broken records, I thought, no minecraft has only one broken record disc. And I actually think that a mouse is much easier for minecraft, I do like the xbox controller for many things, but not minecraft.

Minecraft is who's main game? His point is valid, even though I disagree. Buy you know your post should be deleted instead.
I am sorta in the mix of it all, because I am a die-hard xbox fan, but I am in love with Minecraft. As for Minecraft Xbox360 Edition, I liked it, but I always like having to remember the special way you have to place items to craft them. And the game feels so much darker. I do like the sheep though, how you can just punch them once or twice and get wool. Overall, I think it will last at least 2 years, but to me PC Minecraft will always be the best!
"Minecraft" has already made it, and will continue to do so. This game fills a void that only a few indie games had taken advantage of. I wasn't planning on getting MC, as I already have "Castleminer", "Castleminer Z", "Fortresscraft", and "Miner: Total Forge" (and I've played MC on the PC). Yet, here I am. That means something. Not to mention the sales. All games eventually die out, or rather the interest of the player. Thing is, the MC community is HUGE. I don't foresee it stalling out anytime soon.
Interesting viewpoint, one I had not really considered in depth. I don't need to date myself either, but I'll say that the vast majority of players on this game tend to be very young (on XBLA). From my experience playing on Total Miner Forge, very few players take the time to build anything larger than a house. Your comment about it being borderline work has some truth to it, as I never have a shortage of people wanting me to build something in their world, only a small handful that are willing to build for you. That is the real potential that could make this game much more than a form of entertainment. If played the right way, it instills discipline, cooperation, an honest work ethic and most importantly, vision. Not a bad tool set to have, and something the youth currently lacks in mass.
"Projects are never truly completed. They are abandoned." -- George Lucas
George Lucas never said that. He said "A movie is never finished, only abandoned."
By my interpretation of that quote, he meant that a movie is abandoned because it has to end in 2-3 hours. The movie could go on forever. You changed his quote and are trying to make it sound like it means they are going to abandon Minecraft and leave us with an unfinished product.

2. All games die.
3. Eventually a new clone will take over
4. 4j and Microsoftwill do ANYTHING to keep it goin
5. 5 is better than 4
Thats my nickel on it.
