With pistons soon incoming (Hopefully this month?) I'm sure I will be soon building massive redstone creations. I don't know much about wiring, however, so I know my machinery will take me a long time to build.. I'd hate to have someone find the wiring and mess it up! What do you guys think about maybe locked doors, set zones that can only be changed by the host, or any ideas like that? Do you think they'd work? Do you think their worth being put in the game?
People dont usually dig around buildings unless their greifers. I'm able to usually just put my contraptions underneath the ground and it's fine. But you can make your own locked doors if you wanted to
And waste a whole bunch of time and space on a door someone can still punch through...
I'm just saying.
None of my friends are greifers so if there's a locked door they ask me what it is and if I decide to allow it I let them in to see ^^
I even made a lock for my cobblestone house so mean ol' nether creatures cant get in =D
Build a structure out of obsidian or something ridiculous around the spawn area. Add iron doors and a moat if you want. Clear the diamonds and sand away from the restricted area. Expand these to several perimeters - hide all your redstone wiring behind a wall. Anyone helping you build should have a bed outside of the walls. Any visitors should have a bed outside of the spawn area. Anyone you don't want to let in..... can go punch obsidian.
Sure, someone can spend a stupid amount of time punching through iron doors and obsidian if they want.......

My friends would probably think I'm hiding diamonds, and dig into it anyway...
Maybe I need new friends haha.

Well the floor looks natural. It's not like I dig into a pit of gravel then cover it up with dirt, you probably wouldnt even know the redstone was there if my doors weren't opening when you flipped a lever or pushed a button =P
I'd honestly get more satisfaction from outsmarting the griefer with traditional vanilla ways than using permissions to stop them.
Permissions are sorta why I don't like SMP. I like the idea of having to actually protect my stuff. I get satisfaction of knowing I outsmarted someone trying to steal or destroy my stuff.
I owned a server for about a month(on PC) before I decided I was to lazy to actually upkeep it. Someone TNT'd the main house where we kept community supplies and stuff and I had a lot of fun playing Sherlock Holmes and trying to find out who did it. I had it narrowed down to two culprits before I game up.
Best way I can tell you to deter someone once would be to just have a wooden door with pressure plates. Nothing special about that right? Everyone does that so someone going to grief your stuff will likely walk through it without thinking because its common and they wanna steal your stuff first.
Under your floor if you have room dig trenches one deep and one wide. Keep at least one block between each one. They should be 7 or 8 blocks long. Can be less. But not longer. Put a water source in the very end and TNT in every other place. On the one block between each trench put your redstone. Make it all connect(repeaters will be needed though) and wire it up to one of the pressure plates by the wooden door. DON'T WALK THROUGH THE DOOR YET! You'll kill yourself
You'll have to search to find out how to do this without a piston. But you need to find a way to cut the power to the TNT from the pressure plate using a lever or button or something so that you can walk through it when you want. But other people can't. In 1.7.3 you can use a piston on a slope area to cut the wire stopping the signal. Don't know how to do it without one.
But the basic idea is that you keep the lever/button/pressure plate/whatever your input is hidden in a random location no one will look. Use your imagination. When you wanna use the door you flip the kill switch and anyone can walk on the pressure plate(s) without setting off the TNT. Before you log out though or go mining for awhile or whatever you flip the switch again and the trap is ready to go.
For anyone who isn't good with Minecraft physics what happens is that when the TNT is activated the water from the end of the trenches will flow through the TNT(which is why it shouldn't be more than 7 or 8 blocks long. Plus its easier to wire anyway). Water in TNT will still do damage to people and mobs. But it won't destroy anything. Its the basic idea behind TNT cannons. Except you're not launching another piece of TNT here.
If you really wanna **** someone off set up a delay for more TNT to go off after they've died from the first set of TNT so their stuff gets destroyed.
Its a one time use thing(it doesn't destroy itself. You just have to reload it) but its still funny. Tried setting this up in a friends house on my server I mentioned but he logged in while me and a friend were setting it up xD
I had a few things going "missing" so I set up a very small obsidian room with an iron door on it put some pictures up and put a single chest in the room so they could see it. Warning signs on the outside to say out and when I was asked what it was I said it was the one thing thats private in the world of mine.
Took 4 real days before one of them had to press the button on the door that was actually linked to TNT under his feet the best part was he didn't say anything when he was blown up he returned to the chest while everything was destroyed then screamed some words down the mic when he found the chest was filled with sand and in the chest I had used the sand to spell LOL.

People actually can punch through obsidian. It takes a few minutes though.
One solution, put game on invite only and invite only people you trust. If you still get griefed, maybe you need to think about who you make friends with. I know a friend of a friend can join by some law, you can get to anyone by going through a chain of 7 people. Friends don't let friends grief.

It's what makes me still go back and play Total Miner: Forge.
If it dies it will be your fault... SO CLICK IT!

Yes, yes they can. Check what you quoted.
The post actually mentions punching through obsidian twice....
