What do you consider "legitimate" when referring to how someone got Diamonds, or another item? Is it based whether or whether not they played on Peaceful, or another difficulty? Personally, since I play on Normal, I consider that legit, and if you get Diamonds, good for you, but if you're playing on Peaceful or Easy, Diamonds and other such valuable items mean less, of course. What are your thoughts?

He's a slacker jack and he's okay, he games all night and he sleeps all day.
This is just my opinion but the only thing that makes getting diamonds harder in a higher difficulty is the requirement to have food on you when you get hurt from monster attacks which really isn't even that bad. Getting diamonds at all is still good. Peaceful is a difficulty for people looking to build without interruptions from monsters and not many use it for the sake of adventure.
I consider getting diamonds on any difficulty legit. As long as you don't spawn them in though. I play on easy most of the time and whenever I go caving and I found diamonds, I make sure I have TMI on so I can save my inventory if something were to go wrong (I tend to rage a bit when I die and loose my diamond).
