So as I continue to expand my castle, more rooms are added. They run the gamut of useful (bedchamber) to semi-useful (obsidian factory) to completely aesthetic (library).
So I decide, why not build a dungeon. A place where, if I felt like fighting some monsters to gather resources, could just delve in.
Easy to make. Just enclosed an area off and made sure it was dark. In no time at all, I have a regular haunted house in there.
Practicality, well that was another matter. I found that this kind of thing can get out of hand really fast. For instance, I have a wall of glass so I can see what beasties were waiting for me. Needless to say, when a Creeper explodes, it totally takes out that whole wall, and the monsters all pour out into my basement, usually requiring me to retreat and regroup and beat them back enough to rebuild the wall.
So I built a small hallway within the glass, made of obsidian. Problem is, the Creeper explosion blows the door off, and also the monsters get stuck alongside of it.
So I tried to make a drop in front of the door, leading to a lava/stream grinder, covered with two trapdoors... I found out that doesn't work. The monsters can hop over it without falling. So then I just make a sheer drop. The AI sometimes makes them smarter than rocks and thus unwilling to step off to their doom, standing in the doorway. The explosions stopped being an issue, but it still wasn't really working in a satisfactory manner. Too much trouble just to kill 1 or 2, which begs the question why don't I just hunt them outside.
Well, I think I'm finally pleased with this. Here's what I have, top down, northtop.
[] = Rock walls
G = Glass
X = Lava Blade Grinder
O = Obsidian Doorway
Also, above the grinder, I have a glass walkway about 5 up, which has a hole busted in one place so I'm not "inside" per monster detection. I head up stairs and go in there to see what's available.
Here's a side view of the grinder. (W=Water, L=Lava)
I cover the lava blade so the spiders wont jump into it and rob me of my string. So standing on my walkway above, the monsters wander into the top water level, which drives them into the lava blade. The booty falls into the water, which drops into the sub-level. The stream washes the spoils to the foot of the stairs. So I leave the walkway and drop down into that sub-level and collect the items in total safety.
So far it's working like a charm. Gunpowder, string, bones and feathers piling up in the chests, without risking a lick of damage. Any suggestions on how to improve it, or tweak it?
