Couldn't you just make the world invite only? Sure you can only gain access if someone is logged in to invite you, but wouldn't that be less of a hassle than trying to create special spawn points and babysitting friends of friends?
He wants people to be able to join without needing an invite.

hmm i'd try lining the walls with TNT and pressure plates along the walls. It would take a lot of Creeper farming but If you can build a mob farm you should be able to collect it easily.

i like this idea.. But don't you have to reset every time they die..? Also some players may break the pressure plates?
Can you place lava at the spawn?? I was thinking of a lava pit coated with (walls & floor) stone and if the person wants in the world they can either call via mic for someone to build a bridge for them or if they try to punch through they will die from lava overflow. anyone know if this is possible?? I'm at least going to try tonight.

Lava and water are currently NOT placeable at the spawn. Water will be after update.
You can however place lava or water around the spawn, I am not sure exactly how large of an area this is but I think at least a 20x20 area.
You can't put lava or water Under or Over the spawn so you would need the spawn location at bedrock. (so they can't tunnel out.)
(if your really evil make the lava go to bedrock and let them think they can tunnel out.)
Or you could do some form of floating island lava walls type combo.

That's fair (and also what I assumed), however given that there is no perfect solution in place, wouldn't it be worth trying to see if it's a better "imperfect" solution than his current one? Just sounds like the open way is a bit of a pain and wondered if they tried the invite way to see if it was the lessor of two evils.
As a somewhat unrelated sidenote, I'm surprised at the quality of friends some people keep. If I had a griefer on my friends list, who wouldn't respect my wishes, I'd simply remove them.

You can only "mine" obsidian with a diamond pickaxe. You can "break" it with anything but you won't get the resource drop with anything other than a diamond pickaxe.
There are some excellent traps out there. It'll be easier to implement once pistons are available, but you can build a self-resetting trap with a pressure plate wired to a dispenser with an inverter that resets the plate with an object. The plate signal is always "on", except once every 5 minutes when the object holding the plate down despawns... and then the dispenser resets the plate. You only have to reload it every 50 hours or so.
What it activates is up to you... on the PC, mine triggers sticky pistons that pull the floor out from under the griefer and drop him to bedrock. On MC360... maybe some machine-gun arrow dispensers?
Read up on redstone circuitry; there's soooo much stuff you can do with it.
Umm.. wouldn't the easiest solution be get better friends? Or trim down your list?
Having a friends build only option would be kinda pointless if it's your friends doing the greifing.
Still like to see it as an option when open severs come available.

Cannot do invite only the girl who.leaves her xbox on goes to work so we must be able join whenever.
And yes we were discussing building a lava pit and we would have to build a bridge for the new comer.
