So my friends and i have a dedicated server (leaves xbox on all day). The prob is sometimes friends of friends jump in and grief us. So we made the spawning area as high as the map will go and made it out of odsidian. There is a door that only opens from our side so they can't get In to our world with out someone giving the ok.
This is how we deal with randoms comming in. Anyone else have something similar or some other some other process of letting people into your world?
Ya it sucks dude... Even if your on invite only you can still end up with these problems...
But how do you get into a dedicated server when nobody is there?! You don't so I see where your comin from.
Here's my best suggestion:
-Make an obsidian surrounded area at the spawn. (2 blocks high at least)
-Make a monster spawner that dumps monsters into the obsidian spawn trap.
-Make sure everyone you don't want dead constantly to have a bed.
-Make sure your bed does NOT get obstructed...(Or your basically kicked out of the server until somebody rescues you from the spawn trap.)
Only way this doesn't work is if you play on peaceful..
P.S. YOU CAN BREAK OBSIDIAN WITH YOUR FIST
(However this takes forever... That's where the monsters come in... Muhahaha)

This happens to me all the time. So, what I do is that I hide out stuff in a buried chest. Then, when they join, I would usually be wearing diamond armor, they ask me, "Can I have some diamonds?" (So far, I've heard that 94 times and still counting...) So, I tell them, "Depends, will you grief with them?" They usually say no, so I always say, "Well, let me try to remember where they are, just go and do whatever." So, I get someone reliable to watch them VERY closely. Right when that happens I save the world. If someone griefs the world, I just restart the world and they'll never be able to join without getting kicked on that world again. It's a relatively long process, but it works for me.

Minecraft Wiki - Each obsidian block takes 9.4 seconds to mine when using a diamond pick taking 76 consecutive strikes. As of 1.0.0, it takes 4 minutes and 10 seconds to break obsidian using anything other than a diamond pick.
When Pistons come out you can use the Pistons to open up a hole that pours lava into your Obsidian Home =P
Simply Connect several Pistons to a lever and leave them open to block the Lava from flowing in and then when you get people you dont want simply activate the switch which will lower the pistons which will spew lava into your dainty little Spawn trap
could i see this server sometime? i too have a dedicated server and i would give you a tour of it :)i would be willing to help you make like an obsidian box around the spawn
Thanx all. Yes we are playing on peacefuly (which I hate) and the girl just leaves her xbox all day. I can't wait for pistons cause the lava idea was an idea I was throwing around too when we came up with the spawn tower. It seems to be working at the moment.
you can only break obsidian with a diamond pickaxe...
Actually, i had my brother test to see if obsidian can be broken by hand, it can be but it takes a while and it wont give you the obsidian block you hit with your fist..
If you surround the spawn area with lava will people spawn into the lava? Also can people spawn in the water. Breaking with fist takes long time, breaking it while underwater is impossible without a way to keep from drowning. ^^

Update: so yesterday somebody on my friends list jumped in the game. I asked him to out on his Mic. He didn't then I sent a message and told him him if he breaks down our iron door we will take it as an act of aggression. He broke the door down and we killed him. He spawned in the spawn box and we went up there killing him repeatedly.
The spawn box works but here is the trouble: I needed to be baby sitting him. What do you guys think I can do to make it a self containing baby sitting room with out me having to be up there killing him every time?

Couldn't you just make the world invite only? Sure you can only gain access if someone is logged in to invite you, but wouldn't that be less of a hassle than trying to create special spawn points and babysitting friends of friends?

How long does it take to break Stone with fists?? Kinda curious as it may be feesible to put 1 layer of stone and 1 layer of obsidian.

You say you have a hole all the way to bedrock at the spawn?
-Make floating spawn platform
-Make sure newly spawned cannot jump across
-Make sure they fall to death unless you build a bridge to them.
