I was curious if anybody knows whether or not sugar cane can respawn in "wild" locations, like the way you find them from the get-go. I have a currency system that relies on paper, and I want 100% control over the money distribution, needless to say. I wouldn't want people to make their own farms.
Sugar cane only grows if there's a source block. For instance, look at wheat. You need to plant it for it to grow. It's the same with sugarcane. If you want a efficient farm without anyone getting any, just make a giant underground farm. It's what I do all the time.
The initial sugarcane will not respawn but as long as you save some pieces you can replant wherever you want as long as it's adjacent to water. I think it has to be a dirt block. You don't have to use a hoe like you do when you plant wheat seeds.
One sugar cane planted yields three sugar canes since the plant grows three blocks high. Instead of harvesting all three pieces and having to replant, just harvest the top two sections and leave the third one in the ground. Saves work.
Thanks for your answers! I actually have a massive farm, and it gives me roughly 800 canes every ten minutes....I'd go bigger, but frankly its annoying without another player to help. I'm building up a massive stock in paper so that I may distribute it as currency. As long as nobody can find a newly grown cane out in the wilderness, I can control my distribution of paper. I've hunted it all down. Sugar Cane is extinct to the public.
Knowing this now, I'm moving my sugar cane farm underground, where I'll grow an ungodly stock of canes and laugh at the world as it marvels how a tundra can produce so much damn paper!

But other than that, take a relatively worthless item and then use it as currency. It's genious
Thank you!
If labeling sugar cane as an abusive substance keeps the peace, then I'm obligated to do what I have to.
