I'm sure a lot of people know this, but I'm new to minecraft and found this out on accident!!:lol:
If your underwater and running out of air, or get stuck drowning in a hole(glitch) just place a torch underwater at head height and it will disappear giving you a fresh breath of air!! Sometimes you will loose the torch, but not all the time's.
Hoped this helped some people! Makes building underwater so much easier cause you never need to come up!!, as long as you have torch's!, lol

If you just put a sign, head high, underwater, you'll have a permanent air pocket as long as you leave the sign. Try it.

This also works with a ladder.

Also if you have a Jack of Lantern bring it down close to that air pocket. It will provide light to work by and you can mine it and bring it away with you, unlike glowstones.

LOL a lot of people said the same thing... Tried a few and sign work's wonder's, the bucket is nice to but fail's when digging stairs down sometimes unfortunately i had no sign's, torches, or ladder's so i was screwed

I like the door idea, if works, the door is the only block that is 2 high.

Buckets dont need to be placed anywhere. Survived a night underwater using a bucket

I usually place a pressure plate down, then place a sign ontop if it to make a 2 block high air pocket. I do this since on the ocean floor its hard to find walls to place the sign.

I wish they would add scuba gear or something. lol. or maybe a submersible that is faster than regular swimming and has a claw that can equip anything you put into your right hand that extends out.

Love the use of doors though. I can't say just how many times they've helped me when working underwater.

Well to be precise, when potion making comes out, or rather enchanting i believe there are enchantments/potions that cause that effect more or less...O_o

Of course that will be a while yet though...hmm...

I use the "ladder or sign trick" all the time....once I built an underwater kingdom in a glass dome!

The bucket is equivalent to having scuba gear.

You can also use sugar. It has to be next to an edge and on dirt, but you can make a column of sugar as high as you would like. I wish i had known that when I was making my under water city.
