Anyway, i have been playing minecraft on xbox since it came out. I played the minecraftforfree site before it shut down so i know how to play the game. For the month between the free site shutdown and the xbox game i spent my days on the wiki. I know just about everything in the game except redstone, which i don't need that badly right now.
Anyway i have this friend who plays with me on the xbox. The thing is, he's a lot worse than me. He gave up his first world because of falling into lava and other things and he tried to build a giant tree by placing 9 saplings in a square.
Anyway I'm doing the fantasy city challenge with him now and were doing the humans. We had to build 3 houses to start each with 3 rooms. I built a large style pueblo house (Thx ChimneySwift11!) out of cobble and made a bedroom and a crafting room with a living room in it. When he built his....sigh. He made the thing 3 blocks high and really small. Then he made another room 4 high and another one onto that a block lower and roof at 4. So he has 3 blocky (too blocky for my taste), small ugly rooms/houses all stuck together.
He also copies most of my designs...like i built this wheat farm out on a floating island i made in the water out of dirt. I don't like using my designs over and over so i left it on that world.
On the challenge we're doing now he copied it, with cobblestone! It looks really ugly out of cobble and i wanted it out of dirt, but i can't go around correcting all his mistakes.
My helping him doesn't seem to work...
Does anyone have any tips they can offer me to give to him? Something that will perk up his building skill?
Beyond gaining experience, learning from YOUR designs and trying new things, there is no better way for him to become a better builder. The only other bit of advice I'd like to add is to play with other people while you play with your friend, so he can see other peoples' methods of building.
Some people are inherently bad at design and there's nothing you can do about that, sadly.
It's not like he doesn't know anything, it's just he makes silly mistakes that bug me, (cobble instead of dirt for garden, one roof too short, but rest fine, can't get up a hill and places cobble.) Placing cobble instead of dirt to get up a hill makes it look ugly and just bothers me to no end.
I have a friend who does the same things. However, allowing him to learn on his own with a little reminder or guidance will be better in the long run, as he'll actually commit designs and what "looks good" to his memory.
Give a man a fish, yada yada yada.
