My best friend has just gotten into Minecraft since the xbox version came out. I have been playing since alpha. The first few days I had it, I built a couple of water elevators so that I could just drop down into my mine and swim back up to the surface. He was impressed with that, and soon they were all over his world. A few days later, I had torn down my dirt hut and replaced it with a proper house, complete with a redstone activated double door. He was totally impressed with that, but had not gone down far enough in his world to get any redstone. The double door was his introduction to redstone, and I did my best to give him a very simple clinic on how redstone works. Yesterday, I completed a bank that had a three lever combination. When he saw it, I think he began to realize the potential that really exists in redstone.
So tonight, before I let him in, I want to build a Rube Goldberg like contraption that ends with a block of TNT blowing up right behind him. I have been thinking all day of different "modules" that can be part of this thing, but I figured this was just the place to turn to turn this thing from cool to EPIC.
Here are the things I have thought of so far...
The very end of the machine will be a minecart that gets activated, rolls over a selector rail, and activate a block of tnt set underneath the rail, which then falls right behind him.
I will have some water, held back by redstone, that will wash away a torch, causing gravel or sand supported by the torch to fall. The last block will fall between two repeaters, completing a circuit, triggering the next module.
Same deal as before with the water, but this water flow will wash a dropped item onto a wooden pressure plate, triggering the next module.
A dispenser that fires an arrow through a flow of lava, landing on some wool and burning it. I have two versions of this, too. One that releases water and another that completes a redstone circuit by unpowering an inverter, triggering the next module.
A couple of different sections where I will activate a minecart, and it rolls over a selector rail, powering the next module.
That's what I have come up with so far. Any suggestions from the community would be appreciated.

Just trap him in a room with a one way door, and working light switch to dim redstone torches, but have the switch outside. When he gets traped, turn all the lights off, and let him panic and eventually get eaten by zombies. Just like the Miami zombie attack... ;)Who's evil now? o_O

Add note blocks in there to play a short tune. Bonus points if you can make it sound like his favorite song.
I love it! Can't believe I didn't think of noteblocks!! He wasn't on last night, so I am still building it. I'll definitely work that in. I'll try a funeral dirge right before the tnt drops. You get a rep!

Haha, thanks!
I'm a very musically minded person. I work note blocks one way or another into my pranks, builds, and so on.
My favorite so far is digging under someone's house and setting up a noteblock or series of noteblocks to play repeatedly. This, however, only works once and only on the new people to the game.
The reactions, are however, priceless "WHAT THE F- IS THIS MUSIC!?! WHERE IS IT COMING FROM!?"
How did you managed to ge the arrows to light wool on fire? I've tried a similar set up with 6 dispensers shooting arrows through lava at a wall of wall of wool and not one caught on fire.

Actually that one didn't work. I've seen it in some videos for the PC version, so I thought it would work here. Now I am working on a tower about 10-12 high, where some redstone controlled lava flows into it and burns, but I'm not having a lot of luck getting the whole tower to burn before the fire goes out.

I wish I could. Maybe I can shoot it with my phone. If it was on the PC, I'd totally put that on Youtube.

Yes, just capture it. This sounds awesome.

But little will he know, the song is just a distraction...
