So I'm building more frivilous rooms to my castle, and decide it would be cool to build a well. That way I could grab water any time I need it.
Before going in I must confess I don't understand the water rules very well. Sometimes I dump the water and it increases the volume. Sometimes I dump some in and nothing happens (ie the levels dont change). Conversely, sometimes I can endlessly scoop up water, and sometimes a whole lake dries up because I took one bucket.
But I started to fill this well, and tried taking water out of it. I was hoping it would have the endless water tile I saw elsewhere, but nope, I seem to take out the same amount as I put in, often less.
Are wells worth it? Am I better off just keeping a chest full of buckets of water instead?
Wells are worth it if you are far from a water source. You just need to maek them endless. Lets take a 2x2 square. Pour water in at opposite corners and it will make an endless supply.

Well, allow me to be the first, but (I'm not sure if this happens in Xbox 360 edition) in the PC edition you can have an endless water resource if you make a well like this:
You should be able to pull water from any corner after you have it all in place. You can tell you did it correctly because the water will become still.
Also: You can't link a file on your hardrive like that man.

Water is strange.
The important bits are that water will go 7 blocks in one direction from the source block. Unless there's a hole nearby (within 5 blocks, I think).... then it will just pour into that for some weird reason. If you have a drop of 1 block or more in the water's path, then it will go 7 more blocks. It's funky.
To make a well, spring, whatever you should do the infinite water trick mentioned above.

But you can only pull water from 'X' so that the two source blocks on the side refill the middle.
