I would like to build a safe, durable outpost in the nether. To do that, I need materials that can endure ghast fire. Could anybody give some suggestions?
Ghast fireballs count as fire and explosions. Pretty sure TNT would just go off....
Cobblestone is the easiest/cheapest, but any stone is fine. You can check the blast resistance on the wiki to see if a block you want to use will hold up.
Before your Ethereal Jaunt, load up with a bunch of cobblestone and glass, and some pickaxes (STONE. Dont bring anything diamond in the netherworld, its not really useful and you'll just risk losing it.)
The minute you step through the portal and arrive, get to work. Start building a cobblestone shell around the portal at once. Ghasts will start to converge, so work quickly. Nothing like having five of those blimpy bozos bombarding you with fireballs while you are trying to build.
Once you have the shell, start putting in some window ports with the glass. Set up a chest and put some extra flint in there.
Now you have your netherbase. A good place to regroup and stash things. Just dont try to sleep there, you'll go boom.

How much are you paying for your cobblestone lol cause i know a guy who just hands them out. that way you dont have to pay for it lmao

I can see his usage of "cheapest." Diamond and Gold blocks may be very good for protection against ghasts but the word "cheap" doesn't exactly come to mind.

Can't tell if serious....
Cobblestone doesn't cost much time. You probably already have a lot of it and you can place it freely.
Stone (not cobblestone) half-slabs would require you to get cobblestone, smelt it and then craft it into half-stones. It costs significantly more time to use stone half-slabs to pave the nether than it does to make a cobblestone tunnel. On a silly side, as mentioned, you could certainly make a tunnel through the Nether out of Diamond Blocks (crafted from 9 diamonds) but that's going to cost you a significant amount of time to collect.

Forum Admindefinitely not obsidian, seems to blow up the portal quite often from what im hearing from my friends.
so i would have to say cobblestone, stone, and bedrock if you miraculously manage to get your hands on it XD.

Obsidian does not blow up in the Nether. The portals will get deactivated, but obsidian is pretty permanent....

Cobblestone is cheap.
Beds are awesome, too.
Oh, and if you want to use cobble you should make a cobble factory by making a big pool of water and pouring lava int o it.
