If I wanted currency i would pick something common that beginners can find.
Kind of defeats the purpose of a currency... Currency is supposed to be something that is not easily obtained, hence making it valuable and worth giving up goods for..
If your currency was something common that anyone could find, then what incentive would the seller have to sell their item for a currency that they could easily go and gather themselves?
I would be like going to a car dealership and trying to pay them with newspaper.

I think a genuine currency should be added to the game on multiplayer, there should be a system similar to the exp in the game where currency accumulates by progressing in the game
That would be copying Total Miner. I'm not defending TM.

In case you don't know, trolling is anonymously insulting someone and saying very horrible things. I am not anonymous, for I have shared information e.g. my Minecraft name. Also, I was not insulting anything, I was asking you a question: "Isn't it obvious?" as in "Isn't it obvious that the currency to be used are emeralds?", a good a helpful reply to my question would have been something like "Well yes actually, now that you say they are saying a lot about it being the new Minecraft currency on the Minecraft Wiki and even being able to trade emeralds with villagers, now that I see it like this is is quite obvious. Thank you for pointing this out."
Sorry for being curious and asking a question.
Trolling has nothing to do with the specific content of the post, so long as it is meant to garner negative attention. Anonymity has nothing to do with trolling, as trolls do not have to be anonymous. Not saying you are a troll, just pointing out that your definition is flawed.
Now, your original post about Emerald was not helpful in the slightest. It was not helpful for two reasons. One: Emeralds have already been mentioned on the first page of this thread, and Two: Emeralds may not be added to Minecraft for Xbox for a long time. If he needs a currency now, why would he wait a year or more for Emeralds to be added? This means that both of your posts didn't add to the discussion, and your second one was off topic entirely.
On Topic: I believe gold or one of the systems mentioned further up on this page would work best for you, OP.
If it hasn't already been said: redstone dust. I get heaps of it after mining and don't have much do to with it. But it still requires work to get. The other option is coal, or iron. Things that are relatively common, but not so common that you can walk three steps and get some, like dirt or cobblestone.
Letting the currency evolve naturally would be the best way to do it. It's worked for Homo Sapiens for many, many millenia.
With only 8 players to a world on XBLA, barter will work the best. It's when you get outside of that small box that a currency becomes necessary. Trying to come up with an artificial "money" in an XBLA environment will only screw things up. When the host tries to impose a currency system, the players will just revert to reality, and trade outside of it amongst themselves. Things cost what they cost, and are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them. If you have one paper, and I'm willing to give you a stack (64) of gold for it, guess what one paper is worth? 64 gold. If I'm NOT willing to give you 64 gold for it, you can say all day long that one paper is worth 64 gold.... but it's not.
The host of a game is, in this sense, the local Government. Imposing *anything* on the citizens results in unintended consequences. You (as "governor") could say that wood is worth something... and they'll all start wood farms (because money would then literally grow on trees). Just because you decree something doesn't make it so; people will tend to gravitate to that which is real, regardless of any fiat decree from the "government". Our real-world government could declare tomorrow that the most popular, desirable, and sexy flavor of ice-cream is "asparagus"... does that make it so?
If a currency is necessary, it will evolve on it's own, without any intervention. Let it. Otherwise, you're an example of "Kip's Law"
I would use gunpowder... Make you work to get it haha
LOL
"I work in a hostile work enviroment."
"How's that?"
"Well, my co-workers frequently hiss at me, and if I 'get in their bubble' thay explode."
"So that are short tempered???"
"NO, they literly explode!!!"
"So how are you alive?"
"Two words... Diamond, Armour."
It may have been suggested, if so I apologize, but I would incorporate Obsidian into the economy system. It's not easily available without at least some deep digging and without a diamond pickaxe, so they'd have to work (contribute) to get the supplies to get it.
Plus, it's awesome to look at, and resistant to creeper explosions.
Of course, they can set up a "farm" using water and lava, but again, they have to have the diamond pickaxe to "harvest" it.
Just a thought. Lots of interesting perspectives in this thread.
I just have a simple barter system where if you want something, you give the other person what they want to so it's fair. And if you promise your deal and don't go through, the other person is able to kill you.

Then people could greif and place it everywhere. I hate greifers... ):/
Originally I thought a currency system is some what ridiculous. Most simply barter.
But while building infrastructure on my map(grinders, collection points, rail and houses) I came upon this idea.
Players join the map. If they plan on taking residence, (have a signed home) They could contribute 8-12 iron on a month or bi-monthly basis.
Build a bank with a chest&sign for each player(or have them do it as sorta registration.)
Anyone not paying up gets evicted.(house sign goes to "for rent" item redistributed.) reduces dead wood/unactive player Re-register(not best idea)
Iron is used to restock community chests.
Collection item could change monthy/weekly to suit overall map needs/supply.(1 diamond/5gold/32 redstostone/2stacks of wood) Something practical, but not costly. It should feel like contributing rather then costing.
The idea is more for building maps and community rather then just a host/player hoarding. Gives player plenty of time to ante up. Hell they could even take out loans to build faster, but that's another can of worms.
Anyways that's my take on managing some sort of currency. More like a user fee..

Don't steal other peoples posts. If you want to quote, write something with it, like 'what he said' or 'agreed'.
