I have been thinking, in order to have a successful world, you need a currency for trading.
Does anyone know the best currency, it should be an item that is extremely rare, and has few uses. The best I culd come up with are slime balls.
"Trading" (with villagers) is coming to the PC. You don't really need a "currency" as you're not buying anything, like at a store. You're "bartering" with villagers- trading one thing valued at "this" for other things valued at "that". All you need is something to give a "value" to what your trading compared to what you're trading for. In the case of the PC, it's the upcoming "emeralds".
No, you won't buy things with emeralds. More like trading 5 bows worth 2 emeralds each for 1 diamond pickaxe worth 10 emeralds.
If I wanted currency i would pick something common that beginners can find. Or else your gonna have a lot of broke noobies with no houses and food...livin on the streets. If it something like slimeballs, then someone is gonna find a huge area for spawning them and take power over everyone. If you had something like leather...or wood. Then you would be working. If it were wood/cobblestone then beginners could get it and you could make it in mass production.
If you want my opinion i would say it's up to the traders. If one dude wants diamond and the other has a diamond then it's up the dude with the diamond to see what he wants. Say i'm low on wood. I'm too lazy to go cut some down. Some guy walks up to me saying he wants some iron (lets say 3 for this). I say "I really need some wood. If you can get me a stack of 64, i will give you the three iron. Problem solved.

Ok, so not trading, buying, but still, for now, untill the xbox version gets "emeralds", I need a currency for my map.

It needs to be rare so people cant counterfeit the currency, they can only get it from doing a job or selling an item. I would of course have a stockpile hidden to distribute to the people.
Just how would you "Distribute to the people"? Plus, how can they counterfeit it? Everything you get in the game you have to get yourself. It's not like i want wood and just have it.
And back to my point. What if i want to make a player-to-player deal and i don't have cash but i have enough wood to make this guy VERY happy for a long time...and he's got lotsa iron...just what i wanted.
Edit:What if a griefer takes your "hidden stash"? What then?
If he has 8 people or more who come on his map he needs something, but i just think the players making their own deals works just fine.
Imagin this, you join a server, you mine and build a howse, you have tons of gold, you cant find diamonds for a pickaxe, you head into town to go to the market, you sell some of your gold at the pawn shop, then you go to the hardware store and pick up some diamonds. Eavryone lives happily ever after.
So you have a bunch of little minions who buy and sell with your stuff?
Another point: My best friend joins the game with me and he stumbles apon a huge thing o diamonds (lets say 16). I have absolutly nothing but a bunch of lapis. Do you think he wants to give diamond away for lapis (It's either me or the hardware store)? Besides. Where is the hardware store gonna get all this diamond?
Plus, your dumping a bunch of work on yourself because 1. You have to put prices on every single item in the game. If you don't then people could take advantage of it and over-charge people for their stuff.
Edit: If 10 lapis is worth 1 diamond then what are people gonna pay for leather? If i get ten leather then i can only get a breastplate. Are you saying 10 leather is the same as 1 diamond?

1.
Privet deals are ok
2.
My stash is hidden, surrounded by obsidian, has a combination lock, booby-traps, and ITS HIDDEN!!!
If you make it something rare then how are people gonna get it? Diamonds can't be 10 lapis (wouldn't be fair to leather), but they can't be 50 lapis either (too hard to find it all).

I got it under control, why else would I be a host of a well built city?
Over all it is your choice in the end, i just believe that a cash isn't needed (lapis is too rare for mass trade and slime balls can be dictated my finding the right chuck and hogging it to yourself).

In the xbox version it is VERY hard to find a slime chunk, besids, based on a fair system, 64 balls will buy 2 diamonds, it sound like a lot, but I duplicated lots to put in the market.
I do have one last thing i can add. If you really have to have cash then i suggest farming huge amounts of slime balls (near a 1000 or more) and hand them out to people who join the game. You would have enough cash floating around that there wouldn't be problems (of course someone could throw in lava/cactus or leave the game with a large ammount). Although you still have to set prices on everything.

It's hard, but if you do it, your now king of the map. If your using a duplication hack then you should have no trouble with cash, unless you hog it.Look, i got to go to bed here any minute. I can't argue with you all night (if i could stay up i would :D). If you get right down to it then it's your choice. Unless you have a duplication hack, i would go with player-to-player deals. You would safe yourself time (lots of time because no need to make prices). If you have a cash system then make sure you make good prices (if not your gonna have a whole ton of people angry at you for some small reason or another). You also need to find a way to hand out cash. If you can hire people for work then go ahead.

1.
I will hand it out
2.
If i did have tons, it wouldnt even madder if someone leavs with some
3.
I wont hog it, I have my own vault of all the important items in large amounts.
My final word:
Duplication hack: Make prices with everything and your fine. Just hire someone to work/get payed.
No duplication hack: Let people make their own deals, unless you have some way for your people to get something working.
More word: Even three block thick obsidion walls can't keep out someone with a diamond pick. People can find it by following you/seeing your house. Even the best traps can be disarmed with a skillful person. You may have a good vault, but you better watch it, someone is bound to get in.Good night!

Why? In this game you work for things you want. You just can't buy it.

For a civilized world, like in Machinimas.

It still comes down to the fact you have to put prices on every single item in the game for this "hardware store" to buy and sell.
