When you first start a new game go to the nearest tree and get several pieces of wood. Build a crafting table and make a wooden pickaxe then go for stone. That way you can have stone tools quickly before the first night.
Explore caves with plenty of touches. First to light up the cave so mobs wont spawn and secondly, caves are a great way to get resources easily.
If playing online with a buddy, you can aggro hostile mobs and your buddy can walk right by them. So if skelleys are after you or zombies as long as your buddy doesnt attack them he can walk right up to them.
