As soon as I got the xbox edition, and realized it was enderman free, I knew I wanted to build a mob grinder and take advantage of free drops until the update comes out and ruins it all. I have quite a bit of experience building these things, so the grinder *does* work. Plenty of mobs are spawned. The channels of water work to bring the mobs to the killing mechanism. I chose a 25 block tall mobavator as my killing mechanism. Mind you, I had not really built a serious grinder on the PC since spiders learned to climb.
At the top of my mobavator, I decided to place two cacti to kill any spiders that decided to climb the wall instead of dropping to their deaths. When I finished, I fired it up, and within a few minutes, I was starting to see a small, steady stream of mobs falling to their deaths. Success, right?
Once I thought everything was working, I sent a message to my buddy to come check it out. He's a relative MC noob, so I was explaining how it was all working. I told him that it usually takes about 5-10 minutes for it to really get going, so we waited. Fifteen minutes later, nothing had changed. Still a small steady stream of drops coming to me.
Later on, I dug a tunnel 1 block above the roof of the grinder and replaced some of the roof with glass to see what was going on. There were dozens upon dozens of spiders in the grinder. They were falling off the platforms into the canals, then they were just climbing back up onto the platforms, safe and sound.
What have you guys done to alleviate this problem?
PS - As I typed this, I may have come up with a solution. The platforms are 6x6x2. If I dig out the bottom layer, they won't be able to crawl back up, right?
I have mine set up one off the ground (the wall was 5 high) and I have had plenty of spiders falling. I do end up with on living at the bottom every once in a while but nothing a few good punches to the head wouldn't fix. My set up is like this... (8x8x1) 4x with 3 blocks in between each for canals.
I never have problems with spiders in mine... they go through the grinder and get killed like everyone else.
1. Lava blade killing mechanism.
2. 2x2 water channels & drops, not 1x1.
I'm never at a loss for fishing poles & bows
That's wierd. The killing mech isn't the problem. I have seen at least a few spiders die there. The problem seems to be that once they get into the canal (which is 2x2), they climb right back out.

Ceiling Spawnpad Floor
Seems this is the way to go, as the half step didn't work.
If you place half slab in a pattern where there isn't four blocks open the spiders wont spawn because they need those four consecutive blocks of open space.

Here;s a diagram of what I am talking about -
That should solve my problem, right?
