So, while I am hooked on Minecraft, I've never played it on any other system than the Xbox, and I haven't experienced anyone else's worlds, so I'd like your feedback as to how you build your home base.
Here are some features common to my castles (plural, as I have this tendency to build a big castle, tire of it, and go build a bigger and better one elsewhere)...
1.) Lava Moat. Nice for keeping some of the spawn off the doorstep. Just gotta be careful. Nothing like getting blown into your own lava moat by a creeper explosion (irritating as hell but probably comedy gold to anyone watching)
2.) Carpet. I'm sure most other players do this... instead of stone floors I make the floors an extra level deep and then load it up with dyed wool. Favorites are red, white-and-grey checkerboard, lapis lazul blue and black.
3.) A Fireplace Disposal. Usually on my main floor, I build a fireplace with two squares of lava. Not just for ambiance, I come up to it and throw away excess cobblestone and dirt.
4.) Foundry. Usually build a wall out of furnaces, so I can split up the cooking job.
5.) Bedchamber. Do you really need a seperate room just to house the bed in Minecraft? The pragmatist says no. The typical minecraft player prolly says Yes Of Course I Do.
6.) Armory/Magazine. To keep the arrows, swords, bows, armors and TNT. Do we need a seperate room... etc.... (see above)
7.) Workshop - Work Table and a room full of chests for all the crafting materials. Since the word CRAFT is in the game title, this is the room where I spend half my time.
8.) Garden Patch - Originally I created large farm areas to grow wheat, trees and sugarcane. Then I discovered Bone Meal. With Bone Meal, I dont need a farm, I can just instantly whip up what I need. So I make a 6x6 area, water filling the edges in a trench. If I need wood, I drop a sapling in the middle and bonemeal it. If I need wheat, I fill up the grid and bonemeal them. Rinse and repeat. And when I'm not using it I line the sides with sugarcane (which doesnt use bonemeal) and routinely come and harvest it. Right now my garden patch is on top of my castle.
9.) Spires. Something about spires makes the castle majestic, especially with burning rocks of netherack on top. Alas the limited line of sight in this game doesnt make the spires as impressive as they should be.
10.) Treasury. My ultimate "do you really need a seperate room for this??" room. I small chest in a room with a gold block floor and iron door. I keep my gold, diamonds and lapis lazul in here.
11.) Delve Mine. In the basement of my castles, you'll usually find a trap door with a long, long, long hole with a ladder. This is pretty much an express to the bedrock tile, so I can do my mining without leaving my house. Just be sure to close the damn thing up, because I HAVE had zombies climb the ladder.
12.) Library and Art Gallery -- Serve absolutely no function in the game, but look cool. I usually put these on upper floors -- useful floors low, frivilous floors high.
How about you? Any features to add to the list? I could use some new ideas.
Everything you've listed seems really cool, but I would be worried about griefers coming in and burning out your carpets... just a little heads up. What I like to add sometimes on my structures is a farm. I trap some pigs and chickens and breed them.. I'm not sure if you can do this on the Xbox version yet, but you probably will be able to soon.

Yeah, be sure to make your world invitation only. And Xbox doesn't have breeding yet.
About other rooms, what about a nether portal room? Make a room with a portal in the middle to hell. Maybe dress the floors and walls with netherrack patterns?
