So I found a pack of wolves and had some bones handy, and so now I have a canine army. I pop down to the local monster-soaked mine (ie not well lit) and start to go about mining.
Maybe I don't have the knack for it, but I'm not using wolves ever again. In the past I've killed some of my tamed wolves because I couldn't put up with their incessant barking... but now it was time for them to pay off, by being my personal precision attack team.
Precision was decidedly lacking. These doggies are flat out dumb. First of all, I expected them to attack enemies on sight. Well, they will every once in a while, but most of the time just stand there dumb and happy while the zombie or skeleton zeroes in on me. Then they attack AFTER the thing starts to knock me silly.
But even that would be fine -- at least they are extra flankers and allies when fighting the monster. But sweet jeebus, these idiots jump into my line of fire (swords, arrows) so bloody often that I end up hitting wolf more than zombie half the time. Soon my Call of the Reviled pack was pared down to nothing, mostly thanks to friendly fire.
Plus trying to avoid hitting my own dogs and all the motion makes combat choppy and a bit confusing, so I figured whatever negligible damage they add, I'm much better off without them.
I'm sure there ARE scenarioes where wolves are very useful, but I personally havent found them yet.
Wolves will only attack mobs when you are attacked or you attack them yourself. The best plan would be to attack the mob, or get attacked, and then let your wolves finish them off. The path-finding is a little weird, but certainly nothing is perfect.
However, I'm not sure, but I think one of the updates contains better path-finding for not only mobs, but for wolves and other passive mobs.
sorry to hear that - the few times i went out for a monster hunt the wolves were super helpful - usually tearing apart skeletons and then off to the next one - i dont bother with the bow/arrow - i find it kind of clunky and does litle to no damage - the wolf pack was my perferred method.
