Forgive me, I am a Minecraft noob. I bought the game and have been having a lot of fun. However I would like to play the game with my daughter. I tried today and just could not figure out how. We are both avid gamers. We have both played online with our xbox friends, but we really want to play locally.
First your Xbox has to be connected to an HDTV either with a component, HDMI or VGA connector. Then just turn on the second controller while playing, and sign in to an account. Then the game should prompt that controller to join.

Hope this helps!
It is an HDTV, but I am not real sure what kind of cable runs between the two. I will look soon.
If it is an HDMI/VGA, your two player may not be enabled. To do this, go to the pause menu, help and options, display, and then enable the 2 player vertical screen

That doesn't turn splitsreen on :/ That's only the option to change it from horizontal to vertical spliscreen.
Your Xbox needs to be hooked to an HDTV, with either an HDMI cable or a Component cable.
HDMI
Component
If you are using a component cable, make sure it's switched to HD instead of TV. Also, check your Xbox System Display settings to make sure your Xbox is outputting display in HD.
If all of that is right, just start a world, turn on a second controller, and have your daughter sign in.
Really? huh, that's interesting. At my friends house, split screen wouldn't enable until the vertical option was enabled. Maybe it's just his TV or something.

I am using a component cable. However when we turn on the xbox I have to switch the tv to av. How would I change that?

To use the component cable for HD, all of the below inputs must be plugged into your TV.
Video: Blue, Green, Red
Audio: White, Red
You do not use the Yellow video input for HD.
There should be a component ipnut section somwhere on the back or side of your TV. It should be those 5 colors in a row. Once you plug it in, turn your TV to the component input and make sure your Xbox is outputting a display in HD by going into System under settings, and then Display under System. There should be a list of things like 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p. Depending on your TV, pick 720p, 1080i, ot 1080p.
You should be able to play splitscreen now on Minecraft.
