I happened to stumble upon the idea of making a Nether Portal without having to find diamonds first, and it's goes a little somthing like this!
Things you'll need:
Bucket (3 iron)
Lava source
Water source
Dirt
Flint and Steel
How to do it:
Simply put, you're making a mould. I'll post some pics later, but for now, just go with these crappy lines. On each layer, fill the appropriate empty blocks with lava. Then pour the water over the dirt so it flows over the lava and makes Obsidian. Then pick up the water, build the next layer's mould, and repeat. When you finish the 5th layer just dig all the dirt out and light your Nether Portal!

Well I'm glad I could break it down for everyone to use it easily. It was really fun to make the first Portal without finding any diamonds. Kind of like you're cheting witbout actually cheating!
just get 4 dirt, place them as it will give you a square at middle, place lava then water, make sure you will make it a source lava, place redstone before lava!
