I found 3-4 of them close to sea level but usually you should be looking for Moss Stone or Cobblestone that you haven't placed. I think that's the only place I've seen natural Cobblestone.

usually you would look for moss stone or cobble that you have not placed. another giveaway is an unholy amount of 1 mob spawning. they can be found really close to the surface or deep unerground. you just have to get lucky.

Yes, and I've also randomly dug into ones that, for all practical purposes, had absolutely no access from anywhere at all until I dug into them. Just rooms planted in solid rock, pretty much.

They usually spawn in the middle of no where connected to nothing underground, but occasionly they're connected to caverns or the surface. They're pretty rare until 1.8.
