I've explored a solid 80% of the map and only have about 9 sugar cane to show for it. It generally spawns on sand near water right? Anyone else having similar problems?
You have to place the Sugar cane on a dirt/grass block adjacent to water.

I can just place it in the ground and more grows?
Edit: I feel even stupider for having logged on and tried when I knew this wouldn't work. Fml
No it works, i have a sugar cane farm, but the block you place it on must be adjacent to water
