Ok I stand corrected, I got my info from another thread but even at thoughts sizes.
862x862x128 = 95,109,632 & take one third off that for Air blocks, that's 71,332,224 blocks that can interacted with, still a lot but I guess that depends on the seed or default world gen.
With new map size, it would take 7:18 mins to cross if the world was flat with no water & traveling at 2 blocks per second, but no world is flat without watter yet.
Hey, like many people are you presuming that the only draw back to a small world it the amount of blocks it contains?
No I'm not I'm defending the world size, as I think it's adequate for for it's purpose.
People look at it like any other game, Minecraft is made up of individual blocks so each block counts to the world size, I thing 70.000.000+ million blocks are not something to look down at.
My theory/opinion on why the worlds are small aren't hardware problems/limitations but game play based, new comers don't want to be overwhelmed in a huge world where they can get lost easily, as most Xbox users are casual, it had to be pickup & play, not pickup & play, get lost & rage quit.
& I have come from the PC version, but I spend most of my time in general area not 10.000 meters away.
The dimensions of a Minecraft board can't be an even number because you have a row/column at "0". So that's 430 on one side, a single column at "0", and 430 on the other side. That makes the dimensions 861x861.
Just start a new map with peaceful turned on, take your map with you since it has coordinates.
I walked from one corner (X-431, Z-431) to the other corner (X431, Z431). Since X0,Z0 is a space that a LOT of people forget about, that makes the overworld 863x863, however the outer ring of the map is not buildable on, so that gets reduced to 861x861.
The Nether was a little harder since it is surrounded by a couple layers of bedrock all around, however I was able to get as far as 142 in any direction, making the Nether 285x285 since again X0,Z0 is a space.
So world sizes are - Overworld 863x863 or 861x861 however you want to look at that non buildable ring on the outside, and Nether 285x285.
So combined you only have 1,146 x 1,146 of buildable surface area with the game.
On the outside of the 360 map, you can see a faded image of where the PC map extends to.

4J StudiosAs mentioned the outer blocks on each edge cannot be mined.

While your here, could you nip in the bud the theoryies as to why the map was made this size.
1. Gameplay decission.
2. Technical limitations.
3. None of the above.
Also could you give some idea as to how big the map could get theoretically.

I will have to see if this is true

The height is 256 blocks.
Total = 863x863x256=190660864 blocks.
That's the overworld only, I was too lazy to count the Nether too =P
