I had a question I was hoping someone could help me with. I built a massive (and I mean massive) tower that was meant to have water/lava running the down the sides. Everything worked out great, except that I apparently built part of the tower over the Spawn Box. So, of course, I can't place the water or lava where I need to.
My question is this...
Is there a way, using the beds, to change the spawn points so that it will let you place the water or lava? Am I just stuck at this point?
I have to admit this had me very angry last night. All that work....and then I go to put the final touches on and can't do what I want to do because of some invisible box the game never warns you about. Nice.

The spawn area is static in each world. The beds change where you spawn at, but the spawn area never actually goes away. This is where compasses will always point and there's the invisible safety border.
There's nothing you can do about it.
MineCraft has sort of always been like this - there are "features" that aren't all that intuitive or even written anywhere. If you had to make a manual for MineCraft..... well, it would be awfully big. That's why we have minecraftwiki.net
Does anyone know how big this invisible spawn box is? I've wasted 10 hours so far making obsidian, mining it, then placing it since I couldn't place lava or water where I wanted. I would like to extend that area though, and if the spawn box isn't too big then I might be close to the edges.
Hmm, I can't play online since I don't have xbox live, does it automatically make the game multiplayer as soon as you have more than one local player on the same map?
It's stupid that it's static, too. I understand limiting griefing, but what about when the game griefs the player?
My favorite seed spawns new players in the middle of an ocean, and you almost drown just trying to make it to the surface. Wish I could fix that...
so i have been working on making kind of a spawn trap. trying to figure out the dimensions for the spawn box has been a huge pain in the ass.still working on it but i have found it will not let you place lava within the area it will disappear. so you can use this to define where your 33x33 area is if those really are the spawn dimensions. hope this helped.
I just had this same situation happen to me with a castle moat near spawn. It had me frustrated for a while before I figured out why my water buckets were not working.
Try to pour lava/water there. If it doesn't work, you're in the box?
I actually did this. :-) looks like the area is definitely 33 x 33...and part of my spawn area is over the ocean. Cracks me up how I can't place place water and yet people will spawn right into it at times. Hopefully we'll see a patch that allows us to change where the spawn box is, or at least allows the original player to place the water/lava wherever they want.
Thanks to everyone for all the responses and input. I just wanted to make sure there were no other options before making other arrangements. And as you can see...
...I made other arrangements. :-) I wasn't putting 100 hours into my world just to give up now.
Thanks! Keeping the Netherrack completely surrounded by glass keeps it protected, and it's still completely usable for water/lava flows if they ever change it so we can start putting either wherever we want again. Hopefully they do...I still want lava running down the sides of that tower.
Well if the spawn box is 33x33 that means I only wasted a few hours of my life mining obsidian that I could have just placed :). Should have tested more. I'm assuming it's 33x33 from bedrock to sky as well? My main tower is from top of the sky down to the bedrock, and I was planning on a water elevator through it but it looks like that might not be possible now. Oh well, I'm planning on three others of similar size and I can do it in them :).

Yes...33x33 bedrock to sky. I was going to build a cobblestone and obsidian factory in my basement, but part of it is in that box so it's a no-go.
All you have to do is use a dispenser. It's time consuming if you have a lot of lava to place, but I think it's the only way to do it.
Hope this helps!
The wiki is ussually correct for the xbox but was made for the PC version so there are some issues. I think the spawn box on xbox is 20 by 20. The only way I know of to change the spawn box is when you first start a new seed. Create the world and enter it then exit without saving then reenter the world and the spawn box should be in the middle of the map. At this point though you may be better off moving your build or altering it somewhat.
A couple of ways to find the spawn box is: Pour lava around the area. You won't be able to pour it in the spawn box but will end up with the spawn box outlined from the lava. Or you could place a chest in the spawn area with an easily identifiable material like cobblestone. Then delete your bed (spawn point). Now kill yourself over and over. Everytime you respawn you will be somewhere (random) in the 20 by 20 spawn box. Take a block out of the chest (when you die you lose all inventory) and mark the spot. If you do that 30 or more times you should have a good idea of where the spawn box is. Now just square that up and make sure it's 20 by 20 then I add some to make it 24 by 24 just incase I marked something wrong and mark that area as the map spawn box. Great place to fence and then have a welcome center nearby.
If you build in the spawn box, a welcome center for instance, remember that players will spawn on the highest point on a random block in the spawn box so they can spawn on the roof.

Man I totally didn't know that about the compass. It had me so confused as it was never pointing at my home/bed. That is really good to know.
