I'm working on my FAGS (Floating Aerial Guidance System). It's going to be a series of floating coordinates, every 100 blocks, that tell you where you are. If you're looking at your map, the Y-axis is letters, while the X-axis is numbers. For instance, the bottom left corner is A1, while the top right corner is J10.
The coordinates are 10x5x1, and each are about 100 blocks in the air. Black wool with glowstone as the letters and numbers.
This way, I can just put signs that say, "Hotel at F6", etc. And no one will ever need a map.
CharityDiary, that's an awesome idea, I can't believe I never thought of it before. How much time do you need to invest in something like this? I had an idea though, instead of physically making numbers and letters, what if you used a material-based system? This would only work for a very limited grid (because of the limited variety of materials), but I was thinking that a unique material could be used to represent each row and column of the grid. Each point on the grid would be represented by the two materials that meet at that spot. So if you want to send someone to your hotel which is located at the intersection of the green wool column and the Lapis Lazuli row, all they would have to do is find the point where those two blocks are floating side by side in the map. Your system would be much less confusing of course, but this system would be a lot less material (and labor) intensive.
I still like your system though, for the simple reason that if made large enough, the floating letters and numbers will actually be readable on the players map.
I'm new to minecraft, but I have found myself distracted from the mining portion of the game by a number of building projects. Right now I'm working on a giant Haunted stone tower, (If you put furniture against the walls zombies attack you in ur sleep aaaahhhh!) and an archipelago of floating islands.

Without the skin... Beneath the storm... Under these tears...The walls came down
My last build my my own version of an ewok village. Was going to do an underground upside down town but none of the modders made a mod that would reverse or stop water flow.
I'm currently working on a huge powered rail system leading to multiple castles and some floating islands. Stocking up on gold and iron now, mining the **** out of my map
But now, I'm contemplating on a glass biodome at the top of this huge cliff im building under :3

Also, I got bored lol
