Until they update with the new structures and mobs, and don't really see the need to go there. Especially when 1.8 is out, and you can farm pumpkins, making lit up pumkins, which have the same affect has glowstone.
I hate the place i spawn in. There are ghasts next to the portal that always shoot fireballs at it causing it to stop working which makes me have no choice but to kill myself and lose all my items

Thats why you always bring flint and steel with you to the nether, if you forget i recommend that you get a pigmen to kill you (if there in the update not sure) do you can pick up the stuff, or jump off a cliff
I generally like the nether, but as much as I hate to complain, It really could use a size increase. The reason has everything to do with glowstone. My friends world has approx. 12 people who are constantly on and off ( He is on quite a bit and often leaves it on when he leaves) and there is absolutely NO glowstone left. Quite unfortunate as it limits lighting options to torches and lava( no pumpkins left.)

I know, multiple people can really drain resources. 7 friends and I thought it would be cool to work on a world together and see how the world changes. Our world has 4 known clay blocks, 2 brick blocks, 3 pumpkins (one destroyed by lava), and glowstone is void in the nether. Also 3 known dungeons, all zombie dungeons. What happens a lot now, is we have branch mines running into each other in the overworld, and teams of people scoping the Nether for any hidden glowstone.
And as for the size thing, I completely agree. Before it came out, a friend and I had a discussion as to how large the worlds would be. We knew it wouldn't be infinite, but my friend and I agreed it would come down to 8000x8000, probably fitting the 8-bit theme. When we saw the 1024x1024, wow were we disappointed. Not only that biomes would be limited (what snow and tundra trees do you speak of?), but that pumpkins on a map could range from 15 to 0, (clay is a whole different technical issue, normally it would be common.), and all limited resources would be much more limited.
I like it, except on this (XBL) version it is quite small, and a lot of bugs are everywhere. Once the bugs have been patched and the Nether is up to date to it's PC brother It'll be awesome.
Being able to build a portal into pretty much solid rock and needing to dig extreme distances to find anything on some maps could be addressed. Don't know if that's even possible to fix, though...

2. But glowstone is more epic.

Mushrooms, Soul Sand and porkchops, too. Mostly mushrooms....
As someone already mentioned, I just use it to teleport.....
