Here are some pictures:
Thats how it works, it has glowstone in the canal for light and when they spawn they go into the lava and the droppings fall into a canal where i pick it up
Thats a closer shot of how it kills the mobs
TThats the wall around it, eventually i will add a roof Has plenty of grass for animals to spawn.
BUT THE THING IS, the animals WONT spawn! Ive been waiting forever!
Too many issues and missing devices (pistons mainly) in this version for me to worry about making contraptions to auto-farm and grind mobs just yet. I'm saving that for future updates which will increase the efficiency and effectiveness.
Mainly, I stopped farming because animals DE-spawn too quickly. But it seems that's not your issue here.
no it just needs to be well lit and on green grass when i was helping my wife make her grinder we used dirt instead of cobble and ended up with passive mobs since we lit up the bottom floor, its been since replaced with cobble. out of the 6 floors we plan on making 3 are for aggressive mobs and with 1 'buffer' zone and then 2 passive levels up top (though maybe 2 buffer levels would be better to darken the spawning areas for the aggressive mobs
maybe make it 2-3 stories, or make it larger? though if the lava is making a hostile zone like kane said just get rid of it and beat the passive mobs up yourself
1: Spawning "area" is important you need a lot of space. I use 4 8x8 pads. surrounded by 2 meter deep trenches.
2: lighting passive mobs like light Torches directly on your pads work, or 3 meters off the ground. Glow stone 3 meters off the ground work really well. Placing glow stone one block lower then your pads under water provides no light to the pads at all.
3: you get two chances to get mobs once in the morning and once at night, more or less.
4: do not stand right beside your mob grinder stay at least 24 meters away
5:destroying or covering up all the grass for 256 meters in every direction (might be 100 meters on xbox) will force the passive mobs to spawn in your trap.
thats it more or less
