I've seen pictures and Youtube videos of something I don't quite understand. I have seen a greenhouse that has cactus inside. There is a waterway and cactus come thru. It's like the greenhouse is producing cactus plants? How on earth does this work? Sorry newbie question...
Um, most likely the water pushes the cactus which causes it to drop so it can be picked up by the player. The player then replants it, waits for it to grow, and then uses water to pick it all up again.
If it looked kind of like this, then that what it was.

But it appears automatic. The plants just fall out of the greenhouse. Very interesting.
Its not actually above the cactus. Its not to the cactus. Cactus cannot have a block next to it. If it does then it breaks.
The general way of building cactus farms is get some water streams to all meet at a central point, get a dirt block(or any other) one block above the water, a block of sand on top of that, then the cactus. Then directly above where you're gonna place the cactus you're gonna want to place a block, place a block on the side of that, then remove the block that you just placed above where the cactus was going to go. So when the cactus grows the new piece automatically breaks and falls into the water, then gets carried to the collection point.
You're also going to want more than one cactus. If you don't have 20+ then I wouldn't bother making one. You really won't get the amount of cactus you'll want to make the effort worth it.
Also. If you make one with more than one level make each level have its own floor. When the cactus falls it can hit lower cactus and get destroyed. Lowering your rates.

Ah, I think I know this design.
Cacti will grow up to 3-4 blocks tall. When there is a block above a cactus, there is no room. So to cactus drops the newly grown cactus as an item.
ok. thanks. now i just have to find cactus. hahahaha
