I have a serious problem, every time I come across a lava lake near bedrock during my branch/grid mining activities, I feel this overwhelming urge to completely destroy the lava since it totally screws up my system.
If there's no water around and the lava is relatively small, I simply use gravel to soak up the lava, then I pickaxe it all back up (hence all the flint). I have to make sure there's not a single lava source block anywhere. I keep a chest full of gravel just for this purpose.
But usually there IS water around, and I've spent more than a few 16 hour days changing every single block in the lava lakes to obsidian, then mining it all up with my diamond pickaxe. Yesterday I went thru almost two diamond pickaxes, only using it when I'm actually breaking an obsidian (or other gem) block. I use stone pickaxes for normal mining. I'm now up to 2531 obsidian. LOL Think about how much time it's taken me to break all 2500 of them. Like I said... this is becoming a serious problem. haha A couple of the lakes have been pretty huge, believe me. When I'm done, I'm left with this huge brightly lit cavern (from all my torches), and I sit back and admire it all. It's almost like a work of art. grin
It's a slow but logical process. First I turn the top surface of the lava to obsidian completely. Then I work my way in from the edges, one block at a time. As I expose the lava, I open up my water (I create a stone pipeline from the source) and that gives me a place to stand on in order to mine the next row of obsidian.
What I found is that as long as I'm at the same level as the obsidian block, and as long as there's a block behind the one I'm mining, the obsidian will "pop" to me and won't fall into the lava. So the system I use is important. I save often and try to never lose a single block into the lava. I keep this up one level at a time until the entire depth of the lava lake is gone (and all in my inventory).
I know I could build a massive explosion-proof house with 2500 obsidian, but the black makes it pretty ugly to look at.
So................. what am I supposed to do with all this obsidian? LOL
I wonder if I've mined the most obsidian in the xbox world? The leaderboard doesn't sort by individual block type (I wish it would). Right now I rank 262 in mining with 36,000+ stone...
I guess I have some kind of minecraft OCD... I also have so many Flint, Redstone Dust, Dandelion Yellow, Pork Chops, etc. that I just don't know what to do with any of it. I probably have four double chests full of cooked pork chops scattered around my little world.
The only thing I have in mass quantities that I have no problem using is cobblestone. I build a humongous pyramid at the center of the map, first of all. Then I am in the process of building a "highway in the sky" rail network between all my various outlying homes at the map corners. That will take a while and use a lot of cobble. I also build a tunnel of cobblestone in the nether to protect my portal and get me all the way to my base at the bottom near the lava. But I finally gave up on those stupid ghasts and "cheated" (peaceful mode) to get all my glowstone and soul sand. It was far too frustrating on normal mode.
Ah well... gotta get back to mining and stuff. If you have any ideas what I can do with all this obsidian, let me know!
sounds like you havn't discovered the online aspects of minecraft yet ;D
No, I don't have any xbox friends. LOL Not sure I want any though. It gets annoying and when I do add a friend, I typically delete them after a while. My real life friends and family all use the playstation. For whatever reason, I had to be different and get xbox.
I guess if I did a multiplayer game with complete strangers, I'd have to protect all my valuables and worry about "griefers" and all that stuff. So no thanks, not right now anyway. I'd hate to lose all my stuff and regret it. I'd have to start a new game up to do a multiplater, and that seems too tough right now with all I've invested in my current world.
In response to the part where you said you have a bunch of porkchops...
My sister is obsessed with killing all of the pigs she sees and filling chests
up with porkchops. There are a few chests full of raw porkchops now, lol.
Outside wall is mostly cobblestone and a small section of stone and the inside wall is 98% stone and the rest is cobblestone.
I haven't made my way to the top section of the wall since I need to work out the towers first.
But, the middle row of the wall (because remember I said it is 3 blocks thick) is all Obsidian.
So far it is about 12 blocks high and I counted it out and it takes almost 7 stacks of 64 block os Obsidion for one row. So you can do the math on how much I have used.
That is why I love Obsidian Generators and having more people on my friends list with this game.
Take it to the nether and build a house over lava or build a tunnel under water with glowstone and the black rock. Make a giant floating swimming. Bowl make a giant Mario style bomb an place Tnt inside. Make a black pyramid. Make a 2001 space rectangle spell your name in the sky.
You could make a small cottage with a obsidian wall ( Around 6 blocks high ) and have it as safest base in your map, while avoiding the ugly darkness of the obsidian. I feel making a wall around something always makes it look good
make a house out of obsidian and have a hallway with like 20 nether portals lined up lol.
Since you really only need ten blocks for a portal (the four corners are not necessary), I could make 250 nether portals LOL
That would be kinda cool I guess. Except (1) the nether is kinda pointless in this version, and (2) I've already used peaceful mode to pretty much scrounge up all the glowstone and soul sand I could find in there with my one portal.
I have given some thought to doing an experiment with building multiple portals, but since the nether isn't a big focus for me its way down my list of things to try.
Right now I'm punching every sheep I can find and collecting every dye in the game... since I've discovered the joy of using colored wool blocks as a home decorating technique. LOL I spend all daylight looking for sheep, then sleep and do it all over again. My goal is to have a full stack of 64 dyed wool of all the 16 colors. Almost there.
I guess the ultimate is what others have said - build a three-block-thick house using decorative blocks like sandstone, moss stone (the few I've been able to find), stone (smelted cobblestone), glass, wood, etc. for the exterior, then line it all with obsidian, and the interior block will be wool (so lightning can't set it on fire) for decoration on the inside.
But that's a lot of work and I'll probably never finish it.
Speaking of finished, since this is my 10th post today I guess I'm done until they tell me I can post more here. First day... glad I signed up to join the discussions since I've been reading all the posts here every day.
Have fun, it's time for me to go figure out what to mine, or craft, for now.
Make a prison with iron doors and switches make them as big or small as you want as decorated or sparse as you want i made one cell so far it's got a "Slenderman" painting a creeper painting double chest with bread and buckets of water two bookshelves and a bed outside theres remote trap doors that can be lifted so if the prisoner busts down the iron door they drop into lava {or just close the trap door by hand until an iron trap door exists}

You can't have 2500 blocks of Obisidan!! Either InvEdit or Mod only gets this to work,
It would take a year to mine all of it!! Also the world doesn't support THAT much diamonds and lava...

Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again because a vision softly creeping left its seeds while I was sleeping and the vision that was planted in my brain still remains within the sound of silence
1: a diamond pick axe will mine 1562 blocks (Obisidain @ 9.4 secs per block). OP did say he used at least 2 diamond pick and spent several days mining it.
2: it is not uncommon to find find lava lakes that are 15X15 and 5 to 6 deep. OP did say that they had emptied several lakes
I've never mined that much of it my self, never needed it, but the numbers are their.

You can use the nether for lava and a diamond pickaxe has 1562 uses (meaning he needs at least 2 pickaxes) but the thing I can agree with is that 'It would take a year to mine all of it!!'
