think its all how the items drop, i tested it on myself and some of the items I had did burn up but most dropped fine. sometimes they hit lava sometimes they wont
Though this pic doesnt show my blades you can see where they will get set.
The 2x3 block of cobble is where I set my blades (surrounded on the outside with glass). it overhangs by 1 block and the drop stream is 2 blocks below that)

When the mobs hit the wall they will jump. Their heads will hit the lava, but they will fall back into the water. Most of the drops will survive.
