I have been playing a lot lately and noticed the lack of gold in my world. Not sure if it is just the game, or my world. I have a massive underground base, with a massive farm, mineshaft, and currently working on a Minecart Storage System, which needs gold to work. So I really don't want to move worlds, anything to help me find gold?
I usually find a bunch around the same places I see a lot of lava. Seems like gold and redstone love lava, because I find scads of it around that depth. Hazardous mining, yeah, but I don't see near as much of it anywhere else at all.
Mining to around that depth and punching holes through walls to find additional caverns usually yields a great supply at these depths, and so does mining above and around lava rivers and lakes. At least, in my experience thus far.
It is really a hit and miss. I found that branch mining near lava works well. If you have a bucket of water on you, you can kiss the lava goodbye.
Often times, I'll pick a random spot and just keep digging, and eventually I'll hit an undiscovered mine. At least in my seed (randomly generated), I find SO MANY connected mines that just require a little mining to find.
I agree. Everyone says diamonds are so rare (and they are), but since you can't really do a whole lot with them, who cares? I'm MUCH more concerned with gold, since gold is essential for powered rails and since my main project is to build an elevated rail system that circles the perimeter of the entire map (4 km long for one loop).
I spend all my time down deep, mining for gold, not diamonds. I agree, gold is far too rare. Still... I've been able to scrounge up enough to build about 1km of elevated rail. It's about 26 levels above sea level (below the clouds) so it's perfectly flat except for the ramps at start and finish. I use 2-1 slope on the ramps and use a powered rail every third step. That's where most of my gold has gone. On the flat portions, I use one powered rail for every 29 regular rails... Every 30th rail is powered, with a redstone torch beside it. And I still have about a stack and a half of gold available for my next portion of the project. I've been concentrating on mining before I start building any more of it.
Someone did the math and I think they figured out that there is something like 60,000 gold in the Xbox map.
well it's 1000x1000x30 (roughly) since gold is only found on the bottom 32 levels. and the wiki says gold rate is 0.1437% of total blocks.
that's 30 million times 0.001437 which is about 43,000 blocks of gold ore.
however, its less than that because of stuff like lava lakes obliterating some of the gold that would have been there, and empty space (caverns) that also removes some gold that would otherwise have been there.
I can't even imagine mining 1000x1000x30 blocks in an efficient branch mining system. But I'm trying anyway. Those damn lava lakes keep putting a crimp in my plans and taking up far too much time (see my obsidian post).
While reading the posts in this thread, more points are being brought up. With the gold rate of .1437%, how can the creators, both Mojang and 4J Studios, create such a wonderful way of transportation (and other uses) without providing enough materials to function properly.
I know the only way to really find gold is to make a new world, but then I would lose everything in my Let's Play World.
I have found 23 gold ore turned them into ingonts I could get more but I am scared of the mine because of the dang creepers always sneaking up on me there and blowing me into lave
seems to me your mining to low. I tend to find more gold on lvls 10-20. I usually mine on lvl 13 which keeps me above most of the lava. I have all ways found mining at bed rock tends to yield less than higher up.
their was a bug until version 1.8 or 1.9 that most of the metal ,gold, diamonds, and red stone generated in the north east corner of the map.
On my world, its "where there is lava, there is gold." and "where there is gold there is diamonds" i have had no trouble finding either resource, usually on layer 10-15 just dig until you find a cavern.

Did that and it worked well! Ended find 21 gold, and 10 diamonds in a small time period!

if you have a gold shortage for rails try placing a powered rail every 32 blocks. Its a very efficient way to make railways and you go very fast. Also if you jump out your minecart won't get away on you. I've already built a rail this way 1 km long with a stack of gold to spare.
How?
Its not like im a machina maker
But it only took me 2 powered mine rails to get a good 30 or more blocks.
It makes sence with how small the world is
if you dont beleive me just put the powered rails apart and exsperiment

Well, I started the base at a height of 20, then for the mineshaft I dug down to bedrock.

Can you please provide some sort of explanation or proof so we know if this is true?
