Is it just me or does that sound pretty awful? Two months to port a small already made update? Really?
As long as they fix the big problems and don't create new ones while they're at it I can wait. 2 months isn't that bad I just think some people lack the patience because they're too eager.
Alright let me put it to you this way: there is translating 4 version updates into one, from JAVA to C++(programming language stated by 4JStu), there is play testing for any obvious bugs, in addition to ensuring that the version update does not create any new problems with the bug fix.
After all of that, it goes to Microsoft for test and approval for release on to live market. If they spot anything they feel would cause problems, or would be otherwise unsatisfactory(don't laugh folks, this isn't Windows), then it is back to 4J to correct the problem. Now we have two options on this matter, they can do it fast, or they can do it right. You cannot have it both ways in this matter. I personally would prefer it done right.
I have said this before, instant gratification is a myth, the game was released two weeks ago, and its going to be approximately another month and a week before the version update, give or take a week. In that time, there is going to be an in-between bug patch to correct noted issues on the bug megathread.
They have to convert everything to a different programming language so it isn't "already made".
By already made I meant everything is already done (on the pc end). All they have to do is port it over (I'm sure its not some quick/super easy thing). If they were making a brand new update themselves, then I could see two months.

Yes, they are translating it from Java to C++ (or possibly C#, I'm not entirely sure). That being said, Java and C++ are quite similar. In fact, much of Java's syntax was derived from C++ (especially Class syntax and relations). Also, Java is in many way more simplistic meaning that the translation of code would most likely not delve too deeply into the more complex operations of C++.
That does not mean that it is a simple process, but it also isn't an extremely difficult process either.

Exactly. This is why 2 months for an actual update (not just a bug fix) seems long. If they were creating a brand new update from scratch I'd understand
In all fairness, Microsofts review process can take about three weeks. Given that July is about 5 weeks away, less that 3 weeks only leaves 2 more weeks work on 4JStudios side of things.
The game has been out for 2 weeks, they have had to put a lot of their time into bug fixing since then, so to potentially have the next main TU coming from them just a month after they released the game is pretty good going in my opinion.
I agree. And tbh, I am more looking forward to 1.3 for PC, so the wait for pistons on xbox isn't too bad.
Personally, I think the news is really pretty painful. I suppose I kept telling myself that 1.7.3 would be arriving relatively quickly after the delayed release. Most of my XBL friends have already burned through setting off their first stack of TNT, rail rides around the world and building random treehouses. I think the update would've kept their attention greatly considering all of the fun stuff pistons themselves bring, not to mention the biomes.
After it being delayed from Winter to Spring initially, I sort of assumed that we would be in a position where the update (not the bugfix, but the 1.7.3 update) was already well through the process of shipping.
Self-inflicted sad. Not sure why I was so convinced it would be coming much sooner.
Ugh. I don't really mind the update being in July but I'm pretty disappointed that 4JStudios is going to release updates based on the PC's timeline. Why bother with anything below 1.0 at this point? At least when Mojang was selling the beta version they were honest about it. The Xbox version is being touted as a full release just because it is the "Xbox version".

Well, on the bright side it gives me plenty of time to complete all of the non-piston creations in my world. Of course I'd like it sooner, but I won't complain.
so is there any way for us to go back and watch the livestream now? did they record it?

the only reason that they are waiting to drop the 1.7.3 update is to go along with the "summer of arcade" they keep hinting about. it's a way to sell more copies of the game. and to those that are saying 1.8 might come out around the holidays. i'm 90% sure your right. M$ gotta keep things shelved until they think it will make the most money. friggin greedy pigs. if that wasn't the case the bug fix would be taken care of already and 1.7.3 would be out in a week or 2. i had a feeling when i bought it i was going to get screwed somehow.

I'm sorry this is off topic, but whenever I read any of your posts I read it in Morgan Freeman's voice in my head. Just thought you should know.

That would all make sense if the updates weren't free... Except they are title updates so they will be.
pistons
shears
minor bugfixes
so it'll take another 8 months to get 1.8? considering 1.8 was the adventure update..... sigh....................
truely does suck

Gonna take ten years for 1.8 , that has a ton of content.

Well, considering a major update is for every two months, we should have 1.2.5 by March.
