I made a mob grinder using Etho's 6x6 spawning pads as a design, and the lag is pretty bad. Definitely not the constant 60FPS that has been touted. I can understand it if the problem causing the lag wasn't something that was a realistic possibility in the game, and building mob grinders is definitely a realistic part of the game, so this is kind of unacceptable IMO.
Other people that have created grinders, are you experiencing the same issues?
Edit: I assume it's all of the water currents and signs that cause the lag, but I was wondering if the text on signs has any influence? Because if you don't put any text on it, it defaults to "awaiting approval" on all 4 lines, which is a lot of text and honestly is completely unnecessary, especially if it has anything to do with this lag. Seriously, who came up with that?
whats the 6x6 design? i made a 2 story grinder technically 3 i just havent closed off the top layer yet, with 12 currents of water 4 on each level along with 2 more at the very bottom and a lava blade and i dont have any issues with lag.

I'm in the navy and don't play as much as I used to but I'm still a fan. Always scrolling... Watching... Mining...
Mine is 3 layers, each with 16 6x6 spawning platforms each. I believe there are around 48 water source blocks, and a stack of logs worth of signs per layer. (Not counting the mobavator, which is a 2x2 area that goes up to the surface, with signs on every other block going upward.)
Took me around 10+ hours to build, and I went through approximately 1 diamond pickaxe and 20 or so iron pickaxes, not to mention about 5 stacks of logs. Ended up with a couple double chests full of cobblestone, dirt, and gravel.
I made a lava blade grinder, 3-wide, with the main channel 3-wide, 40 blocks long with 10 double-wide 16 block long side channels.

....L....
Then an additional 40 block long 1 block wide water trough to transport the items into my basement with a pressure plate and redstone indicator to signal if any items have arrived (what can I say- I'm lazy).
No lag at all. (The point is we're talking 23 source blocks of water here, not counting the transport trough).
I used ladders on the lava part (cause they're cheaper to make) instead of signs, but that shouldn't make any difference.
Was it raining? That can slow things down if you have a bunch of things going on.
Other than that, I sorry, but I don't know what the problem is.
No, this lag is just constant whenever I'm in range of the spawner. I'm pretty sure the problem is either the amount of water currents, signs, or text on the signs. If it's the text on the signs, they need to remove the stupid default text... It's too much of a pain to add a single space so it shows up blank. (Especially when I have 200 or so signs.)
@McAngusYoung, nope, not that either, because even when I just get into range before anything has a chance to spawn, I lag badly still.

Sounds like the water then. I have never had an issue with lag because of signs either on the PC or the Xbox.
I've never seen "default text" on signs. They're always blank to start. I just go down to "Done" without putting in anything and I get a blank sign (but I really don't think sign text is your problem).

Do you play offline? If I don't enter text and just hit done or press B it shows that text I said previously.
If you have tons of drops (items etc.) laying around it can cause lag. I know I was testing my computers graphical limits and blew up around 600 explosives (in small intervals of 100 200 and 300. Even after I used the command to remove the drops(worked only two times the third it kept lagging) (single player commands mod) I had lag for about 10 minutes until I left the area. Still amazes me that Minecraft can almost crash my computer when it works near perfect on a game like ARMA 2.

Is that the "compact grinder" from the wiki? that sounds like it.
Btw if you go look at that it says with three stories it produced about 1600 drops per hour.... mine produces about 200-300....
any idea why such a big difference between these two numbers. i made it exactly like the guide said.
I am currently building the same mob system. I haven't noticed any lag yet, but I am having an issue where all my friends seem to lag really bad in my world. I believe its all the water currents that I have. When I go to their worlds I have little to no lag. My connection is pretty decent so I believe it is the water currents causing my friends lag.

BTW Ethos design is pretty good, if the rest of you haven't seen it you should go check it out. His channel is Ethoslab.

There are no drops. Even with no mobs on peaceful, it lags just as bad. So it isn't items on the ground or mobs causing the lag.

How far along are you? Initially it was just fine, but as I finished each level it got progressively worse.
etho's new design (the wooden one of the mindcrack server and snow on his LP) uses no signs because he claimed they caused lag,
my mob grinder uses no signs, most of the caves are lit up and lag is not a problem, although my grinder is on the very corner of the map so maybe this reduces the lag somewhat
I made a large mob grinder... Roughly 20 x 20 at the base, and I only use water currents-no signs. I tend to get lag spikes every now and then when I'm near it.

@Devlinium can you please link me to it? I'd love to test it out.
Edit: Nevermind, found it myself:
He could improve the efficiency if he moved the halfblock to the corner for the pads that don't have all or 3 sides surrounded by water, though, because they could stick around in the back corners. i think I'll get to work on a version very similar to his, thanks!

I played on a server on the PC once that crashed because someones mob grinder spawned too many mobs.
