I'm at work, bored, and have been looking at sweet, sweet floating island vids on YouTube. Now, most of them have been built in creative mode where you can fly. Some, I see, use boats and waterfalls to climb up.
Is this feature in 1.6, our version? Can I either swim up the waterfall or boat up?

There's a generic water elevator (just swim up as we mentioned). There are also the one-block elevators where you place water above a trap door - this is just as fast, looks slightly better and prevents drowning compared to the normal water version. You can also wire up the trap doors to stop other players from using it.
There's also the cart elevator where you stack mine carts and hold LT to very quickly reach the island.
If you're really bored, you can make a spiral railway.

You could teleport there with Nether portals.
