I had a problem similar to this. I was picking up lava from a small pool that was a pretty good distance from where I was placing it. When I got to where I was going and placed the first lava block, it disappeared from about half my buckets.(I had 10 buckets full when I left the lava pit) What I eventually discovered was that I was grabbing "ghost lava". The trip between points was just long enough that I could not remember exactly which lava blocks I had already picked up. The lava was reappearing after I had picked it up. Not only that, but it was letting me pick it up again! I thought that I was picking up another lava block that was one block deeper, but that was not the case.
Armed with this theory of "ghost lava" I tried an experiment. I picked up a block of lava that I was sure I had not already touched, and was only one block deep. Sure enough, it returned one frame later. I then picked up the same block with my other nine buckets until all ten were full. Then I opened up my inventory and moved one of the buckets from my hotbar into my inventory. Sure enough, nine of the buckets' lava disappeared, while the one bucket with a legitimate block of lava in it remained full.
Hope this helps.
I tried your "Ghost Lava" experiment and had the same result . I then went to a lava pool I haven't taken from before and was able to place it in the furnace. Another thing I've noticed now is that there's no icon of the Lava bucket in the Fuel slot of the furnace when you put a ingredient in and start cooking.
I can't swear to it, but I believe the problem lies in the coding of how the buckets work, as opposed to the coding for the furnace. I've not tried smelting with a bucket of lava yet, but i have constant bucket trouble. The main problem being when I dump water or lava from a bucket, creating a new source block(like when I'm turning lava into obsidian with water) it only works around 1/3 of the time. It's more likely that the water source block I drop will...A.) Disappear, or B.) Instantly turn into a block that won't be recollected by just one bucket. I usually have to collect the same source block twice to make it disappear.

I can use the lava no problem but it takes my bucket will this be fixed?
The bucket is supposed to be taken.

I have an update!! Someone above (thank you) said they never had luck with lava that is flowing. The lava i was getting was stuff that was flowing so i went to an alternate lava source. The lava i found was not flowing at all and works perfectly! So the trick is, if the lava appears to be flowing, you can't collect it even if when you scoop it shows you have lava. Thanks all for the help!
Have seen similar problem with moving both lava and water...its like you get it but then you can't pour it. Sometimes each time you "click" something, it appears/disappears visually in the bucket, but never will pour.
My experience: I put a lava bucket in the furnace, the bucket immediately becomes empty and I have a full flame. That flame will smelt a full stack of stuff. Then when I return to the furnace to remove the smelted stack, the bucket has disappeared and the flame is still half-full. But if I return to that furnace again to smelt more stuff, the flame is dead.
Thus a bucket of lava is good for smelting 64 items at once, but nothing afterward.
How long do you wait before returning after smelting?
From the point the first smelting process begins with a lava bucket you have 1000seconds worth of Smelting so 360 seconds (6minutes) after doing your full stack.
The furnace still counts down even with nothing in it after the process has begun.

It's already there.
This thread bores me.
