i have spent most of my time in the tutorial seed, it gives me a village as well as a nice jungle biome with a sandy pool. extra wool in the sky logo if i wish. as well as a huge cavern underneath the starting place. that cool lighthouse down to the south, the fort to the northeast. many reasons.

today i tried to create a nether portal, the flint just lights the bottom block for 15 seconds. no portal.
i have constructed it exactly to the how to, in the help menu.

is there no nether portal in the tutorial seed? bythat i mean, is trying to build a portal a futile effort because the netherworld does not exist?

what other limitations are there to sticking it out in the tutorial seed?

I doubt there are limitations to it my guess is player error.

yes my portal looks like the one in that link, still no luck. do i have to place a flammable block in the center if i am using flint and steel?

Have you successfully created a portal in another seed? If not I would guess you are doing something wrong. Are you lighting the inside of the portal or just the lower block?

Are you sure you built it 4 wide 5 high??

My issue seemed to be my Xbox because when I restarted my Xbox and rejoined my world first light it opened.
