Gold ingots, cause its gold. The problem is that you may not have enough gold. So, my second best option would be cacti. The problem with that is money is literally growing on trees (in this case, sand). My third best option would be iron ingots.
We already have one guy asking about this. Why not just check out his thread instead of making another one not 20 minutes after the most recent post in his?

Maybe you should provide a link because i asked the same thing 20 minutes ago and no one responded so that is why i did a poll. But thanks for the feedback
I think iron ingots should be your currency, gold is pretty much useless. Iron is good because it is very useful and there is a good amount of it. Unlike diamonds which are pretty difficult to find.
Bones. Killing skeletons will earn you a small amount of currency, which it should. You can never run out, so no one person will ever own all the currency. Where could it go wrong?
If you look at the home page it's not "currency" per se, just something to use to value something you don't need and trade it for something you do. It's a barter system- not a money system. What you're using as a "value" should not be an existing item (i.e., gold), but a new one- like the "rubies" shown. The only point of "rubies" (or emeralds, or whatever) is to give you an idea of the value of what you're trading.
I'm sure you multiplayer guys do some bartering amongst yourselves already: "I'll trade you my diamond sword for that full suit of leather armor, ok?"
From the picture shown, you can't convert something to rubies, save them up, and then "buy" what you want. There is no "money" involved. The example shown shows that IF you have enough chicken meat, then you can trade it right then for a piece of armor. Now single players will be able to barter with villagers- but the villagers have set values for things. My guess is you may have to do the conversion several times to get what you want. For instance, a stack of cobblestone to 1 thing, 10 of those things to "something else", and finally 5 of the "something else" to that diamond sword you want. Basically there'll finally be a way for you to trade that useless chest full of something you've had forever into something useful.
I just don't want people to get the idea that "currency" (as some of you are thinking) is going to be added.
No money.
No store to buy things with money.
No "currency" to save, spend, or own. Just trading.
Now, trading is fine, but the real questions are:
* Can you trade for all the craftable items, or just a few of them?
* Can you trade any item, or just some of them?
* Will "prices" vary between villagers, by "supply and demand", etc. or will they be fixed? (My guess is fixed).
Think. All existing items have a use already. Don't confuse things having an item do double duty.
Whatever you use as "currency" needs to be a new thing.
Cute.
But if you use "gold", at least make it gold coins, or golden rings, or gold something so people don't confuse the gold ore or gold bars with the "barter gold".
(Heck, come to think of it, you could use dirt- it's not used for anything).

so many good points here...
I perfer the trade method. Eather you get something or you dont. Ill trade 50 iron for your diamond. It is all about what you got that they want realy.
However, obsidian could be a form of currency maybe. It is a ***** to mine up (without enchants, whcih there are not).

Agreed. Every form of currency eventually fails anyways so it would probably be best to base everything off of trading. However this would make it difficult if you were trying to set up "shops" in your world.
Maybe have them make Arrows. You just have to put a value on each item.
try:
one stack of arrows for one diamond
half stack of gunpowder for one diamond.
stack of bones, feathers, leather for one diamond
half stack of eggs for one diamond.

Perhaps he did not see it. Just a thought
