I want to create an island in the sky where there's a huge land mass at about cloud level and the only way to get up and down onto the main land is to use a waterfall. Is there any seed or easy method for doing this? I suppose I could always just create an artificial island.

Use blocks (jump, put block, jump, put block, etc) to get to where you want to go vertically.
Then use the sneak feature (click the right-side thumbie) to walk to the edge and start placing blocks horizontally.

Repeat.

'Glacier' has a few floating mountains IIRC. But yeah, you can also make it yourself, it'd just take awhile.

Yeah, seems the best way to do this is find a seed from beta 1.6 that had some decent extreme mountains with a few hanging areas, then just expand/terraform. Otherwise, just build it up yourself.

Note that if you use the jump-block-jump-block method, you'll never have grass. At some point you'll need to "grow" grass up to your island by building a very long / very tall dirt stairway, take a few real life days to let the grass grow to the top, then break the stairway down again. (Assuming you want any grass up there; if it's a stone/cobblestone floating fortress, then maybe you don't.)

Entry/exit via waterfall is usually the easiest to build and nicest looking for sky island; I also like to build secondary entrance via Nether Portal -- one portal up in the center of sky island, the other a little distance away from the island at sea level. Your "base of operations" for mining and other exploration can be at sea level right outside the second nether portal. Then within the nether, build your two portals just 10 blocks or so away from each other and encase them in cobblestone so it's a safe trip.
