(Note: I don't kill animals. The only animals I kill are pigs, and I only kill one if there are 3 or more in a group.)
I have 20 dogs. I keep them all in a fenced-in area in my front yard. When I hit around 10, I noticed that there were less animals around my house. Now, there are literally no animals around my house at all. No pigs, no chickens, no cows, nothing...
A while back, a friend of mine killed most of my dogs (jerk), and animals actually started coming around my house! But then I tamed more, and less animals would appear around my house...
Am I correct in assuming that my dogs are preventing animals from spawning in my area?
I don't think distance will matter since your dogs aren't de-spawned as such, they just aren't loaded. Though this is pure speculation on my part. If you want to try moving them then take them outside of the render distance that you can see, then they will definitely be out of range.
That would make sense... perhaps it's the same as the crop growth distance? Isn't that 124 blocks?

Ugh! Do you know the distance for the spawn cap? How far do I have to move my dogs away from my house before animals start spawning back here?
