I can't even begin to describe the amount of idiots on this forum.
For everyone who thinks "Copy and Paste" or "Simple Code, Simple Game". Your an idiot. If the game is so simple, tell me, why is there over 6 million people who bought the game? I would LOVE to see one of you remake this game then convert it over to C++ or C## (Don't know what Xbox uses.). That's that day I will say you are right.
Until then. Anyone who thinks this game is simple or easy to convert, is a idiot.
the idea of mcxbla update coming in 3 week is not cool. i'm working on a rpg map and i can not finish until the updates. So i'm going to have a few unhappy people and i'm sorry but the current version for the xbox is a disgrace to the current version on the computer!!??
and yes i do agree that rewriting minecraft is not easy but could have been planned a lil better
Im going to copy my history report onto my math final. I got an A on the report, so it will give my an A in math too.
That's what the copy/paste comment looks like to programmers.
I couldn't have said it better.
I would like to see him write a game like minecraft, then port it to the Xbox with ease.
The issue with Title Updates and Xbox 360 is Microsoft. Mojang could be finished with the update it could be working perfectly but it would still take weeks for M$ to approve it and put it up for d/l.
why does everyone act as if minecraft is a complicated game? the code is simple itself, converting it to xbox is even easier. pretty much a copy/paste job.
I'm guessing the closest you've ever been to designing a video game is through mods. Everything isn't a "copy and paste" job because it seems uncomplicated, when in fact it is very elaborate. Also, the coding for PC is different from the coding for Xbox because it runs on Java, while the 360 doesn't support Java, so everything has to be recoded to be compatible.
I agree with whoever said 4J should have rewritten from scratch. Minecraft was originally designed during the beginning of the dual core era. That's a LONG time ago in computer terms. Considering that and the incredibly long list of updates, you have a game that's littered with code that runs best on old old old drivers, OS's, and such. Sure, Mojang kept the game compatible with the latest, but ONLY that. Otherwise there would be a 64 bit system in place to take advantage of more memory, more cores, just plain more power. I bet if Mojang just sat back for 3 months and looked at their code, they'd spot sooo many things running inefficiently. Take a car for example. You get a 2005 car. Add an alternater a year later, add a new radiator a year later, add better suspension year later. You still have the same block and pistons designed to work best with the older parts you replaced. And it's quite likely you never re-tuned the car to handle the (slightly in this case) extra power it now has. (New idea, 4J: threaded chunk loading. It would reduce lag spikes nicely.)

you do realize that Microsoft has a tight grip when it comes to the updates of there arcade games correct? Your two weeks doesn't mean anything, The coding is not there, it has to be converted and programmed to work for the Xbox since Java does not run on the Xbox system.
The Microsoft system doesn't let a company update there games when ever they feel like it. It first has to go into bug testing, then it has to be approved. The file size can't be too large. There are a lot of factors that you don't seem to understand.
well its not true that the file can't be to large they have made a deal with Microsoft and Microsoft said that Minecraft has the authority to patch a high amount of memory so i can't be the file patch size. but the bug fixes and the three weeks you're right it takes a bit long when Microsoft releases the updates so yes you're right. but its good there are going to look for bug testing and other random things.
people who overblow the difficulty of converting the code know just as little about it as anyone else.
simple game, simple code, relatively short code. enough said.
people need a reality check, notch isn't a god among programmers, not by a freaking long shot, simple idea and he got lucky with it. the game wouldn't even be alive today without its modding community.
i saw some people make some jokes about it, like if they all wanted to be millionaires then they could only have like 4 guys working on it.
i think theres some truth to that statement.
they'd rather spend longer because they get more money than if they hired more coders/better skilled coders.
and changing the game from java into C++ is not a simple copy and paste job becuase each programming language works differently.
Which is why a simple game in C++ would never have a thousand classes. Because to anyone who doesn't have some kind of boner for Java, that's some batshit lunacy right there.
I still have not thought of a reason why they arent porting the game as is to other platforms. Is it impossible to use Java for an XBLA game? That would be a great reason to re-code it from scratch... But if that is the case, then why isnt the pocket edition at 1.2.5? I am told that the apple products are practically only Java based.
Another reason could be the need to optimize the game for the other platforms (like if it was virtually nonfunctional because of this issue), but the XBOX is a PC that can still play games with good graphics even though it came out years ago - you'd think it could handle a little bit of unoptimized code.
Or, it could be a marketing strategy to introduce unique differences in the game versions for the purpose of encouraging the purchase of more than one game version... but that doesnt make much sense either.
Does anyone actually know why? I would be very interested to hear it.
4J or Microsoft has stated there will be exclusive content for Xbox, that is a very good marketing strategy. And I believe the native code for Xbox is c++? It's why they're re-writing code so we can have more content for Xbox. Not to mention the RAM on an Xbox is 512 mb I think. So I give a tip of the hat to 4J for making it happen.
In any case they need to get it in gear and treat the xbox version like a real game, instead of like a side job, and update it now, theyve allready sold more copies than black ops, just where is my money going? If they actually used their money and 4J HIRED SOME MORE PEOPLE, this game would be getting updates as oftin as Halo, and actually have a chance of catching up to the pc version.
I mean really, is not like theyre trying to code battle field 3 only took 2 years, the maps are bigger and its in 1080p retina HD, this game is [Square]
How many polygons are in a square? =/ lol maybe if we all pre ordered this game they would have just copy and pasted this game on the xbox 8 times with different names -cough- ~call of duty~
Yes, battlefield3 is HD, is bigger and everything, but you have to see the difference. In Minecraft, you are able to manipulate every single block in the game. In Battlefield 3, you may be able to destroy buildings, fences, and other things, but it is not the same. I know it's hard to wait, but patience is the role to be played for the moment.
One thing I'm really surprised nobody mentioned was the input method difference. The xbox controller is not a keyboard and mouse no matter how you look at it. For that reason alone most of the code would need to be redone
Im going to copy my history report onto my math final. I got an A on the report, so it will give my an A in math too.

I laughed so hard at the person who said that it was a copy/paste job. I laughed even harder to this post! Thank you for my daily dose of humor

1000 class files for a simple game... go figure
It's Java. That is simple, for Java.
Which is why a simple game in C++ would never have a thousand classes. Because to anyone who doesn't have some kind of boner for Java, that's some batshit lunacy right there.
