It shouldn't take more than two weeks to update because the planning and coding is already there and it only took 5 weeks for the pc version to go from 1.6.6 to 1.7.3. The two posts above this is exactly why I haven't bought it yet, I can't see myself playing this game for more than a year and a half so if it is going to take a year to catch up to the pc why bother, also they might charge more for an already over priced game
you do realize that Microsoft has a tight grip when it comes to the updates of there arcade games correct? Your two weeks doesn't mean anything, The coding is not there, it has to be converted and programmed to work for the Xbox since Java does not run on the Xbox system.
The Microsoft system doesn't let a company update there games when ever they feel like it. It first has to go into bug testing, then it has to be approved. The file size can't be too large. There are a lot of factors that you don't seem to understand.
A straight port of minecraft to the xbox would probably melt it. This is why 4J have had to make the world smaller and also start at 1.6. Also the pocket edition is taking even longer becuase most phones only have about 1GHz processor or like the new quadcore phones 1.5GHz which is still barely anything. The pc version of the game will always remain superior becuase computers are generally faster and have 10x better graphics cards than a phone or games consoles (i myself have a pretty fast computer and i own all copies of minecraft)
I also own all versions. I had suspected that the need for optimization was likely the cause, but I dont know anything about programming. Thank you, you have brought much peace of mind. Unfortunately, I can still barely wait for all the stuff I take for granted to be implemented.
why does everyone act as if minecraft is a complicated game? the code is simple itself, converting it to xbox is even easier. pretty much a copy/paste job.
You know nothing about code. It's a copy/paste huge amounts of text, and translate with a manual job.
why does everyone act as if minecraft is a complicated game? the code is simple itself, converting it to xbox is even easier. pretty much a copy/paste job.
ok really now. you think that because they coded it on minecraft in Java it will be easy? The only thing that will be faster is theres no planning phase. They have to recode every block and file in C## not Java. They are two different coding languages.
Im going to copy my history report onto my math final. I got an A on the report, so it will give my an A in math too.
That's what the copy/paste comment looks like to programmers.
Woo!! Can't wait!! I still think 4J should've waited to launch MCXBLA until all the major bugs were sorted out and hopefully updates will come out a lot sooner than once a month. The game's a mess as is so I'm hoping they can speed up the process.
People need to be less impatient for the more recent updates. If they rush the coding, there's going to be a lot of bugs and I bought the 360 version primarily to have an optimized version of MInecraft.
Also, one of the only things I want them to change in the next update is to make the mobs less laggy. Attacking creepers is nearly impossible in the 360 version because it's as laggy as it is in SMP, even when you are just playing on your own. The other bug fix I want is the glitchyness of the buckets. I'm really having trouble even placing water :/
If 4J studios can actually add the content from 1.8 and later (Or make the map larger), that'd be great but I don't want to sacrifice my optimization to do that. They can at least update to 1.7.3 because not much content was added to it. As for 1.8 and further, a lot of content was added so I can expect more lag or a longer wait as they try to code it as efficiently as possible.
people who overblow the difficulty of converting the code know just as little about it as anyone else.
simple game, simple code, relatively short code. enough said.
people need a reality check, notch isn't a god among programmers, not by a freaking long shot, simple idea and he got lucky with it. the game wouldn't even be alive today without its modding community.
i saw some people make some jokes about it, like if they all wanted to be millionaires then they could only have like 4 guys working on it.
i think theres some truth to that statement.
they'd rather spend longer because they get more money than if they hired more coders/better skilled coders.
I agree, although i have alot of respect for notch (he did hit the nail on the head with minecraft idea wise), although he did basically gank a good amount of code on the world generation from infiminer. and the basic idea, and slop his own horrid code with it. so i also kinda laugh when people talk about his coding like its the bible...... Since Jeb took over i think minecraft has been improved vastly more than notch would/could have ever done. notchs code is sloppy obviously thats what makes it "complicated"
I am on both sides of the fence with 4j atm, i want them to prevail obviously and make mcxbla as good or better than the pc but i still have alot of doubt. the best way imho to outdo mojang would have been to start from scratch with the port and only use their code on certain instances so they woulda had alot more control on how everything was put in and optimized, instead of taking ports from notchs old sloppy trash code that kills even good pcs with horrid lag. hell their still optimizing it today (pc) on updates and its getting better and better without supercoder notchs help.
Back on topic, 4j in all fairness has created a rock solid game from im sure a total minefield of sloppy trash code from notchs day. i have NEVER seen minecraft so stable EVER not even on a good pc. you still get lag spikes on chunk loading., i hate to give 4j credit cause im still super pissed about world size but after listening to the live stream from roger carpenter i do understand the reasoning behind it. and he does sound like he general "cares" about the project as a whole.
basically as time goes on im starting to lean to 4js side. i agree with alot of the fanboys i love to hate on these forums; give them a break let them do what they have planned, let them get past the big hurdle of 1.8 then we can all judge at that point if it will be worth it or not. personally i think still the map size is a deathblow in the long run but what do i know? only 4j know what they wana do and how there gona do it.
if all else fails i know that all you haters got 20 bucks of fun outa mcxbla already, as have i so i guess its all a bonus from here on out? really what can you buy for 20 bucks now that you will enjoy as much? hell stop get a snack and a soda and you spend 10 bucks anymore....
Small Map size sucks. Beta version is pretty bad. And not being able to use Buckets is down right deplorable. All in all though, XBLA with friends and 4 person, split-screen co-op is DAMN GOOD! Also, 360 version runs smoother than my PC version ever will without me spending $2k or more in brand new hardware.
You take the good, you take the bad, and there you have...my opinion.

I suspect that you have never worked with the code itself, though that might not be the case.
I have recently worked on a mod for Minecraft, and before that I worked on some small C# projects.
The code difference between the two programming languages is major, and even simple statements will often have to be rewritten.
Yes, Notch(Or Jeb) is no coding geniuses, but this is code they have worked on over time.
Just because the code is badly written doesn't make it simple at all.
For example, all the rendering code is done using LWJGL, but now they have to port it all unto xbox, where they will most likely use DirectX.
Porting anything to another platform is neve ra copy-paste job, otherwise, it wouldn't need porting.
The game's a mess as is so I'm hoping they can speed up the process.
Having never played the PC version, since I've discovered that when I install games on my PC it becomes impossible for me to get any work done, I can't say I agree. I'm sure regressing to beta 1.6.6 from the current version is a shock, but the XBLA version is actually pretty awesome if it's the first version you've ever played.
My biggest criticism is that there's this vast community around the PC version, and much of their advice naturally enough doesn't apply to the XBLA version. People will say "use a piston" for some particular purpose, and I'll say "there are no pistons in the XBox version," and they'll say "well what are you playing a piece of **** like that for?" as if that's in any way helpful. But that's not a problem in the game, it's a problem in human psychology, and it's not like Mojang or 4J could fix it.
I just want to comment to something real quick. I am a professional computer programmer with an associates degree from Fountainhead College of Technology and a Bachelors from Strayer University, both for computer programming. Some of you seem to think that you can simply copy and paste java into C, C++, or C# and it'll work. That's not the case. While the languages are syntactically the same, the keywords, classes, and statements are vastly different. Ok, so copy and paste isn't viable, but translation is. Oh sure, some pieces of the code can be ported with no changes at all, but the vast majority of the code must be changed.
Even without the language differences, 4J still has a large task just to find the updated code. For an example, get a large bowl and fill it with dried beans. Poke a hole through all the beans with a needle. Put more dried beans into the bowl and mix them together, then try to find all the new beans and poke them too. This is essentially what 4J is being asked to do. Of course, if Mojang has any real code documentation methods, like an source code repository(svn), then this task is made slightly easier for 4J because now all the new beans have a small piece of metal in them enabling you to pick them up with a magnet.
Some of you seem to think that minecraft is a simple game. Fair enough, you explain the mathematics behind selecting which faces to display, or the math behind culling hidden objects. Heck, you write the code to build a landscape, then rip it up with a noise function. Sure, in comparison to other 3D games, minecraft is fairly simple but because it is 3D, it is still rather complex.

4J StudiosNo we have not sold more than Black ops, I'm assuming that came from Major nelsons stats.
We had more Unique Users online than Black ops.

I love how even with info straight from 4Js mouth, people are still trying to dispute the dates.

Is the XBLA version of Minecraft ALL 4J, or is Mojang involved aswell? I mean for the new code and transfer.

Is it possible to get a bigger world size like the almost unlimited world size in Minecraft for PC? (I don't wanna run out of Diamonds :"( )
