I'm new to minecraft, didn't play on PC but I like to watch the videos. I'm interested in making a special challenge server like survival island or i'be even thought about doing a hunger game server which i think would be epic! But i need help with learning to build the world. How do I control the spawn location? How do I make it challenging? Things like that. I know most of it has to come from my creativity but i need help with the simple mechanics first.

Everybody spawns in the same spot when they enter the world (unless they have slept in a bed) but you cannot change your spawn, I would say build it starting at the current spawn.

Try to build something in the spawn area, like Gman said.

Make it feel like their in survival, make tropical islands, use tnt to destroy structures you don't want.

OR you can wait until the update comes with creative mode.

If you wan't to make something challenging with traps and stuff, wait until pistons come out (next update).

so what makes a good challenge map in your opinion?

Long jumps, dangerous obstacles (lava, water, tnt, etc) and traps that trigger pistons.
