I'm not sure of the length of the portal sound, but ghasts do make noise. As do all the mobs, it's just that in order to maintain 60fps on the 360 they had to decrease the render distance of mobs (how far away you can see them) and also the distance at which sounds can be heard. One way to test it is having another player split-screen. They'll be in plain sight but will disappear after a fairly short distance and any sounds made by them (or a creeper blowing them up) cannot be heard.

Oh, thanks. I was in the nether not too long ago, and there was a ghast firing at me, but I didn't hear the ghast or the firing sound. Just the explosion.

The sound of being in the portal seems to last longer. Not sure if this is a bug, but pretend the lines are sound lengths:
PC: ------------------
Xbox: -----------------------------
2. Ghasts make no sound?
Self explanatory
Edit: Yay I'm a full stack! Lol
