Problems with splitscreen

I have a second generation xbox(before the slim) and have an hdmi cable hooked up to my xbox. I was wondering why it is not letting me hop into the game like it normally would with the slim.

make sure the xbox is set to a minimum or 720p, if you have never used an HDMI cable on that xbox before the xbox defaults to 480p, daft i know.

It's crazy that they make so a person HAS to have 720p... I mean, I don't quite understand how the resolution of a TV can affect performance.
