Ok the spot i have reserved is 17 squares wide I was wondering if this would work?
I also would like my water source come from a single block I know i would have to pour it from very high up i already had this part planned out
I was wondering how long to make each layer
bottom layer would be 17x7?
then the one after it would be
i have about 30 to 35 spaces long to deal with
Now i read somewhere that putting a single space of water every so often is better than having a trench of water running the length of the farm. I can expand to 18 squares wide for this idea.
Why not simply test the flow of water when delivered from an infinite source (2x2)? This will instantly tell you how far the water will run, in what direction, and for how many squares. If you need the water to travel farther, simply reduce the height of the field by 1 and continue this process until it reaches the end of the crops. Make sure to add a collection flow that constantly runs across the end of the field as well. Besides, it is better to understand a concept than to simply copy one.
Regarding pistons, most auto-farms only use the pistons to control the flow of water, not harvest the crops. The only exception is for sugar cane farming where it does the harvesting as well.
I've gotten the automated fields to work (Part 1) but have not successfully gotten the boats to bounce properly to get the flood gate in part 2 to work.
I'm thinking there is something different betwee 1.5 and 1.6.6 that prevents the boats from bouncing properly. Does anyone know a way to stop/start the flow of water on 1.6.6 since this doesnt seem to work and we dont yet have pistons?

The original design is by Zomb13 in the minecraft forums:

there you go
This thread bores me.
now what about a flood/water gate?
